#BOU2018
Great flying visit to @RutlandWaterNR on the way to the #BOU2018 conference today. Great northern diver, osprey, barn owl, and loads of goldeneye and tree sparrow, as well as the birds below.

If someone says “we need more data”, ask yourself whether more data will change how we will (or can) act. Kicking off #BOU2018 with a tour de force from @HugePossum on conservation prioritisation.

The Speedy Poster session at #BOU2018 - each poster presenter gets 30 seconds and one slide to introduce their poster to the attendees. Great idea! (*Makes note to steal*)

About to present my keynote at #BOU2018 on what the future holds in terms of alien species. So of course 95% of my talk will be about the past.

Very interesting talk from @donaldsonlynda1 on persistence and colonisation of papyrus swamp patches by different species, to identify sites that are more resistant (to extinction) and/or resilient (i.e. colonisable). #BOU2018

Great talk from @ja_tobias using morphological data to link form to function in birds. Clear opportunities to study how community composition and population declines might impact upon community function. #BOU2018

Amazing talk from @martinwikelski showing the incredible quality of movement data obtained from tagging birds and the kinds of insights that can be gained from them - from the influence of wind and smell on migration routes to predicting earthquakes. #BOU2018

Back home from the very enjoyable #BOU2018 meeting @UniofNottingham. Thanks to @Bill_Sutherland for the invitation, @stevedudley_ and the other organisers, and all the great delegates for a most stimulating couple of days.

Not so grim Up North! Mark Eddowes shows Cheshire’s willow warblers are doing well - but only in uplands above 200m #BOU2018

.@ja_tobias confirms that birds are not plants! Because avian phenotype can predict foraging niche. And because they’re dinosaurs🦖🦅 #BOU2018

Clear-thinking visionary #BOU2018 talk by @JenGill3 on research needs for conserving migratory birds: demography/popn trends to identify causes of decline, where to focus management (eg to boost productivity or conserve key stopovers) & understanding capacity of birds to respond

@BOU2018 Malcom Ausden @RSPBScience: in next decades due to changes in land use, more than climate, farmland birds will fare badly, upland birds worse; forest birds may benefit. Conversion of farmland to coastal wetlands, reducing flood risk, may counteract coastal habitat loss

Conclusions of really excellent, useful #BOU2018 talk from @_LucyWright @RSPBScience on How to use science to inform decision-making: the case of birds and renewable energy development. Very relevant to @BonnConvention CMS Energy Task Force...

See conclusions of interesting #BOU2018 @_biodiversity @LukeLPowell "NOW is the critical moment for conservation and sustainable agriculture in the Afrotropics". Also he is working with Institute of Tropical Agriculture on balancing biodiversity & economics. #ornithology

After my SciFri talk on Codispersal services by waterbirds and global change went down well at @NHM_London last friday, I am looking forward to my talk tomorrow at #BOU2018 @NHMHydroscape @ebdonana @UoMSEES

Last time I went to a conference in Nottingham University was #ISBE1994! I'm revving up for round 2, looking forward to seeing some of you there tonight and talking bird traits tomorrow at #BOU2018

@HugePossum kicks off #BOU2018 with the Alfred Newton lecture on applying decision science to bird conservation

Fascinating plenary this morning from @JenGill3 on the future for migratory birds and the importance of socially mediated site-selection behaviour #BOU2018

Another great keynote, this time by @TimBlackburn66, looking at the past, present and future of avian introductions/invasions - a rapidly accelerating environmental change playing out over global scales #BOU2018
