The Oxford BPhil is kind of like the Oxford BCL, it really understates in the description how rigorous it is.

Correct
Merton College, Oxford
BPhil, English Literature

Same Uni Abdul El-Sayed received his DPhil, Public Health from. Different (Oriel) College 😉
And All Blue Lacrosse Captain too.
Kris mostly boxed at Oxford 😉
Although he played club rugby at Pomona…

Oh Jesus my friend. You don't know what a BPhil in philosophy at Oxford means, do you? And you obviously don't know many working academics

I'm geeking out over the fact that one of my articles made it onto a reading list for a Philosophy BPhil class at my university

OK you got me, I did do PPE - and a masters in philosophy (BPhil) just in case there’s a labeller for that wanting a head start. Would we rather state school kids didn’t go to Oxbridge? Or is the point that we’re all part of a Shadowy Network (I wish…) 🤷🏻‍♀️

Went to see Kahneman speak at the LSE in 1998. Made a huge impression on me. My BPhil dissertation two years later and my PhD thesis five years later were an attempt to embrace his critique of human rationality and work out its consequences for the philosophy of mind. #philsky

1 week before my BPhil (undergad version of a phd) thesis was due, I banged out 13k new words, revised all 38k words (twice), created my defense presentation, met my future spouse, and spent a lot time flirting with him. Only 30 students out of thousands graduated with a BPhil that year. Fuck AI.
I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

It’s generous and probably was true at a certain time. Especially with the Oxford BPhil and the London MPhil. But I missed out on those. So I really had to be an autodidact on so many basic things. Teaching undergrads helped

Richard Price, founder of Academia Edu, studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at St. Catherine's College (University of Oxford), then BPhil & DPhil in Philosophy.
Awarded fellowship at All Souls College, 2004.
During his time at Oxford, Price started

In Oxford it was until fairly recently not a requirement to hold a PhD or DPhil in order to be a permanent lecturer/tutor there. Indeed, when Murdoch, Anscombe etc were students the BPhil (a kind of 2-year master's) was more of the trendy degree to take, not the DPhil. 2/

#morninglistening to Rimskykorsakov's Scheherazde (horrid tag, curiously!) w/good #LorinMazel and the @berlinphil on DG, 1985. Lyrical but with fire! it is better than his 1977 Cleveland take? Or Kempe's BPhil rec?

He did! I have fond memories of his room at All Souls, and of that one time he liked my thing about Barry on occupational choice during the BPhil in about 1994.

Off at a tangent - when did the MRes idea come into play? Back in the day first Research degrees were MPhil/BPhil/MSc/MEd etc. Surely all Masters degrees involve Research, even taught ones?

It was very funny watching Martin O'Neill adjust to life as a PhD student in the Philosophy program(me) at Harvard, where he was clearly expected to read books for the first time, after the entirely article-driven BPhil in Oxford, following PPE.

yeah both Oxford and Cambridge have a Jesus College. When I first replied, I thought she was in this program: www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/g... Which is a meatgrinder of a program that's extremely rigorous and which she would not have survived with her Catholicism intact.

Ed Martin is one of the creepy legion of reactionary Catholic lawyers. He has a BPhil from Pontifical Gregorian University in the Vatican. He got his JD from St. Louis University which sounds public but is actually Jesuit. He's almost certainly Opus Dei on the downlow.
The US Attorney in Washington DC is investigating Georgetown Law School, demanding that "if DEI is found in your courses or teaching in anyway [sic]," the law school should "move swiftly to remove it"

Federal prosecutors don’t control the classroom. This is a dark abdication of the First Amendment.

We have an MPhil; I don't think we've ever offered a BPhil. (It might be specific to a handful of the older universities?)

I think my MA officially outranks my PhD, at least in the Fens. It's a nicer gown so it's the one I hire for graduations, anyway.

The academicals are important. At St A Bachelor hoods were solid colour inside & out (Fuschia* for BSc!) with a white fur trim. MA was boring red silk inside, black stuff outside. I think BPhil was 'electric blue' and MLitt was yellow. Theology purple

* imagine the honorary DSc gown - solid colour!
