Pretty sure this is a Four-Spotted spurleg ladybug (Brachiacantha quadripunctata) probably subspecies quadripunctata (yes, twice).

ACTUALLY NATIVE!

This is probably Brachiacantha illustris, a species of spurleg lady beetle (coccinellidae). It matches Gordon's figures (1985), but like with many species, genital examination is probably necessary (and I just take photos, I don't kill). Found at 7500 ft in the foothills west of Golden, CO. #bugsky

One of my favorite observations from 2025. Brachiacantha illustris, a species of spurleg lady beetles. Mine was the first on inaturalist! This one was feeding on aphids on yucca at about 8K ft. Aside from a few species, lady beetles are extremely understudied insects.

Brachiacantha dentipes, a species of lady beetle, at Pronghorn Natural Area in Colo. Including a couple of them making new lady beetles! This was a new species for me, and there were hundreds preparing for the coming aphid feast as the yuccas start to bloom.

Some Brachiacantha uteella from August at Eldorado Mountain, CO. They were enjoying the extrafloral nectaries on poplar. These ladybugs are very tiny, and probably more common than iNat shows; they're likely overlooked in favor of larger species.

The other day I came across a ladybird beetle that I didn’t recognize immediately. iNaturalist tells me it is the Ursine Spurleg Lady Beetle aka Orange-spotted Lady Beetle (Brachiacantha ursina). A native North American species. Even in places we think we know well there are surprises!

Ursine spurleg, Brachiacantha ursina. Like most lady beetles the larvae are voracious predators of aphids and scale insects. The adults are thought to prey specifically on tree scale insects. It's thought that they are facing declines due to the introduction of non native lady beetles.
