Leaving aside the Moorcock bit for a second, if you translate "Earthsea" into Hardic (the predominant speech of the Le Guin's Earthsea archipelago) you get "Tolk-inien" so the idea that she was consciously distancing her work from his is wild.
A lot of new wave writers like Moorcock and Le Guin are either consciously non-Tolkien, or take an alternative position by default, through having a radically different worldview. Love LotR, but it also reflects the view of an inter-war Oxford don who was cool with the Empire et al.
