While we are reflecting on Kissinger’s crimes against humanity, its worth noting how the carnage he was so instrumental in causing in Southeast Asia resulted in a mini-scoop of adoptees: Operation Babylift. 🥚

From Black chattel slavery to Orphan Trains to Native boarding schools to Georgia Tann’s Tennessee Children’s Home (where Joan Crawford bought her baby) to Operations Babylift and Peter Pan to the modern family policing system of CPS, the USA is DEDICATED to taking children from their families. 🥚
WHO KNEW that an #adoption agency would partner with ICE.

Adoptees, that’s who. Listen to adoptees.

I enjoy talking to strangers and learning their stories. The woman who did my nails yesterday loves to talk to people because it helps her improve her English. I learned she was part of Operation Babylift, the daughter of American soldier she never knew.

“As the first babylift planes started landing in San Francisco, it soon became clear that many of the children were not, in fact, orphans. Nhu Miller…came to the Presidio to interpret for the older children and found that some didn’t know where they were. They wanted to see their parents, siblings”

I was part of Operation Babylift. I was an infant who arrived in the US on the third airplane. I am also a transracial adoptee. This article definitely hit a nerve with me and how I feel about transracial adoptions.

'Operation Babylift' (really!) is in full flight - the evacuation of war orphans from Vietnam, shortly before the fall of Saigon. (Many of them would turn out to have basically been kidnapped from their families.) Eventually Kim will reappear as an adult character.

Today's shero is Capt Mary Klinker, a USAF nurse who was killed on April 4, 1975 in the crash of a C-5 after takeoff from Tan Son Nhut Air Base, South Vietnam. Capt Klinker and the C-5 were taking part in Operation Babylift, the evacuation of orphans during the fall of Saigon.

children are an oppressed class. Operation Babylift. Internment. Sixties Scoop. Indigenous boarding schools from 1776 on.

detention of immigrant or Indigenous children has been happening under Biden, Obama, Clinton. Lincoln. Washington. Jefferson. the policy is child torture. it is law.

weep. act.
The 5-year-old arrested by ICE In Minnesota is detained at Dilley. We reported on conditions there in the below article.

Parents said the food was contaminated with mold and worms & that children were so under so much stress that they were hitting their own faces & wetting themselves.
Analysis by The Marshall Project of ICE data obtained by the Deportation Data Project found that the Trump administration’s revival of family detention has swept thousands of children into ICE custody. At least 3,800 children under 18, including 20 infants, have been booked since Trump took office.

Here is a weird 70s fact: Hugh Hefner loaned his private plane to help transport some orphans during operation Babylift. And some of the Playboy bunnies helped care for the children.

This week @theverge.com is publishing a series on the legacy of the Vietnam War. I wrote about the generation of children who were adopted from the war. While reporting this, I was struck by how historically singular the experiences of this group of people are.
