Since this month's release of Android isn't available yet, we're currently building/testing an early March security update release providing the Android Security Bulletin backports of High/Critical severity patches. Android 15 QPR2 will be available in the near future though.

The backports are to the initial yearly releases. The monthly and quarterly releases don't receive backports. There are 2 paths: sticking to a yearly release and applying partial security backports (High/Critical severity patches) vs. following the monthly, quarterly and yearly releases each month.

We'll be making at least one more Android 15 QPR2 release soon to ship backports of important firmware and driver security patches released with Android 16. This wouldn't usually be required since we'd have Android 16 released to end users using the Alpha channel and soon Beta.

i'm working with some people on a deltarune qol fixes mod and the document we have is 3 pages long after only a couple days of coding help me

Non-Google Android OEMs and AOSP-based projects can ship yearly and QPR2 releases. There are also security backports to those releases. Security preview access is needed to ship patches without months of delay. We've had that since before our Motorola partnership via another OEM.

My screenshots look like butt, but I highly recommend trying out Pokemon Heart & Soul. It's a conversion of Pokemon Emerald that backports a lot of HGSS additions, adds quality of life features, and plays fantastically on a modified 3DS.

Pixels ship the latest monthly, quarterly and yearly release each month. Non-Pixels ship an initial yearly Android release and then only Android Security Bulletin backports until they ship the next yearly release. ASB backports are a subset of the AOSP patches, not all of them.

Android's development branch can do major refactoring and rewrites. It can make privacy and security improvements requiring substantial changes to the code. It can fix weaknesses requiring backwards incompatible changes. The backports don't even attempt to cover Low and Moderate severity patches.

Android Security Bulletins are backports of a subset of patches deemed High/Critical severity to older Android releases. That currently means the initial yearly releases of Android 13, 14, 15 and 16 without the monthly/quarterly updates for those. This will need to change now.
