This was the Water of Leith this morning in Balerno following the storm - it was great to be able to reflect on the resilience of creation on the way to take part in the service at St Mungo's Church Balerno.

#WeekQforQuotes this famous advertising slogan is preserved in the Museum of Edinburgh. Macniven and Cameron Ltd was originally founded in 1770 in Balerno; its steel dip-pen nibs & fountain pens became internationally popular during the 19th & early 20th centuries #AlphabetChallenge

Setting off fireworks banned in designated Firework Control Zones
To help keep communities safe, The City of Edinburgh Council identified 14 areas across Edinburgh designated as Firework Control Zones (FCZs) from 30 October to 8 November 2026. Check the interactive map:   The zones cover:  Balerno - Calton Hill - Corstorphine - Gracemount - Liberton - Lochend - Longstone - Moredun - Niddrie - Seafield - Sighthill/Broomhouse - Stenhouse/Gaskill, West Pilton - Wester Hailes Within these zones, setting off fireworks will be illegal, even on private property, during the designated period. FCZs aim to reduce noise, stress, littering and antisocial behaviour, while protecting vulnerable people, animals and the environment.

Great to have more young people from Balerno HS out with us yesterday, preventing litter entering the water at the start of the urban stretch of the river. Balerno send different pupils every month so we can engage with as many as possible, encouraging pickers not droppers. Amazing work guys!👍🚮🙌

Great turn out in Balerno to help with sweeping leaves and removing some old fence posts from Graham's Garden in preperation for the imminent new drystane wall to be built. We also removed some invasive snowberry and did some planting in the garden. Very productive, thanks folks!

Great write up from our Secretary in the latest edition of the Currie & Balerno News on how well the Hailes Quarry junior parkrun has progressed since we initiated the project to bring it to communities in the southwest of Edinburgh. One of our best bits of work. 😀

Compassion & caring for our fellow human beings is not equally distributed. If this was happening every day in middle class Bearsden, Balerno & Broughty Ferry there would be a national uproar & redirection of resources. That there is not a national uproar is telling. news.stv.tv/scotland/sco...

In our latest volunteer blog, we chat to Sam: www.pas.org.uk/news/meet-sam

From working with young people in Dunbar to supporting a Balerno CC event, Sam's experience is a reminder that good planning starts with genuinely hearing communities, not just consulting them.

Talking about bell ends. There’s a guy living somewhere in Currie/Balerno who’s using a very high powered e-cycle and Lanark Road as his personal race track. Wheelies most of the way. If he comes to a bad end I wouldn’t be sorry.
