so after the collapse of the Banqiao dam in 1975 tens of thousands of people died of starvation in the following weeks because malnutrition was still so common in Chinese countryside and food relief couldn't reach them.

Fucking hell.

The 1975 collapse of Banqiao Dam and 61 others in Henan, China caused the third-deadliest flood in history. Affected 10 million people and killed between 26,000-240,000 people.

For comparison, all of the other dam collapses in the world in the 20th century only killed 13,500.

OK.

Notably after the Banqiao disaster a lot of people starved to death because they were already malnourished enough for a week or two without food to kill them. And that was mid-70s!
