In Island Southeast Asia, barkcloth has been used to make clothes for thousands of years, produced by soaking and beating the fibrous inner bark of (typically) mulberry trees.

Sanaa Gateja (b. 1950, Kisoro, Uganda) makes intricate works from post-consumer paper that he rolls into beads, sewing them onto bark cloth supports in tapestry-like assemblages. -

Bark cloth is probably the OG cloth, not only in Southeast Asia but in Africa and all the way to the islands of Polynesia. Bark cloth is literally made of bark! Rather, the inner bark of certain trees.

Want to learn more about ancient hats? On Sulawesi, hats, and in fact all textiles, were made from barkcloth until fairly recently, and the tradition of beating bark into cloth dates back thousands of years!

Lehuauakea is a Kanaka Maoli / Native Hawaiian interdisciplinary artist and barkcloth (kapa) maker whose work bridges ancestral material practices and innovation.

Lupe Hoku or star kite 2023 is made from earth pigment, hau cordage, bamboo, shell and kata (barkcloth).
