This horrible and ILLEGAL action to harm the city's #BarnOwls needs attention and action! There was a fine roof. #Owls arrived. It made news. POOF. The roof is gone!

NYC Bird Alliance was outraged to witness earlier today that once again, workers tried to destroy the water tower home of the beloved UWS Barn Owl family. This was despite NY State Department of Environmental Conservation ordering them to halt all work going forward.

👷‍♂🚧 Because the #BarnOwls are no longer actively using the water tower, minimal repairs are scheduled to begin pending @dec.ny.gov approval. Passersby may see construction workers on the tower this week.

NYC Bird Alliance will continue monitoring the situation to ensure the owls' safety.

All seven barn owls displaced by work on an Upper West Side water tower were spotted alive Nov. 1, Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal said. The two adults and five fledglings appear to have other roosts, but some still return to the damaged tower.

Manhattan water tower roof removal disrupts rare barn owl nesting site
The roof of a water tower on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, where a family of barn owls had been nesting, has been removed, causing concern among residents and wildlife advocates. The barn owls, believed to be the first documented nesting in Manhattan in modern history, had attracted significant attention from the public, including photographers and bird enthusiasts. Jessica Wilson of NYC Bird Alliance reported seeing a fledgling on a nearby building roof after the water tower roof was removed, noting that barn owls are nocturnal and fledglings should not be exposed to daylight. The removal of the roof, which was part of a water tower atop a building, was reported to authorities, prompting the New York Department of Environmental Conservation to investigate and order a halt to further demolition. The building's superintendent declined to comment, and it remains unclear who ordered the removal. State Senator Erik Bottcher condemned the incident, stating that active migratory bird nests are protected by law, and called for accountability. David Barrett, a birder and operator of Manhattan Bird Alert, emphasized the nest's high profile, stating it was 'well-known, incredibly well-known, written about widely.' Barn owls are rare in New York City, with sightings in parks being very uncommon. The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation notes that barn owls are at the northern edge of their range, and their population has declined alarmingly. Wilson expressed concern that the fledglings, who rely on parents for food, may not survive without the nest. This incident follows a series of wildlife moments in New York, including the passing of Flaco the Eurasian eagle-owl and the long-standing presence of Pale Male, a red-tailed hawk. The removal of the water tower roof has sparked outrage, highlighting the challenges of urban wildlife conservation in densely populated areas.

Four of the five young American Barn Owls on Manhattan’s Upper West Side were happy to come out for their photo op and pose like pros! The fifth was a bit more camera-shy, staying tucked away inside the water tower, peeking out just once. 🦉🦉🦉🦉🦉💕

Since the entire upper west side of #Manhattan is virgin woods ( #FortWashingtonPARK / #FortTryonPARK / #InwoodHillPark ) where #BaldEAGLES always lived, it's hardly surprising to see #BarnOWLS in #CentralPARK .

🦉✨ Nest box TLC! Now’s a good time to clear-out Barn Owl boxes, but only once young owls have fully dispersed. Clear out old pellets/debris on a dry, calm day, remembering boxes can be used year-round for roosting. 💚🦉

Rob has chosen today's #BirdOfTheDay theme as

#BestOfTheMonth - any bird captures you admire the most out of your August 2026 Collection

I’ve chosen this photo because I was so pleased to capture it. It was nearly dark when I saw this pair of local Barn Owls land in this dead tree in the distance.
