Ben Shahn said, “I paint two things: what I love and what I abhor”. He loved and championed hard work and the disenfranchised; he hated injustice and oppression. Immigrants were dear to his heart, being an immigrant himself as a child (with his family) from Lithuania in 1906. He painted in the Social Realism style, embracing real life and pushing ideas that aligned with his personal leftist outlook. During the Great Depression, he worked for the WPA (Works Progress Administration) and then, as a photographer, for the FSA (Farm Security Administration) where his work centered on rural poverty. During World War II, he contributed to the Graphic Arts Division of the Office of War Information; his insistence on realism brought the horrors of genocide in Europe to the attention of many in the US for the first time. He firmly believed that art could, and should, move public opinion for the betterment of all. “Welders” became an illustration for a popular poster from the CIO labor organization’s political action committee. It shows two welders – one black, one white – looking off into the distance, where, as reflected in the safety glasses, a structure rises – a promise for a bright future. The depiction emphasizes the importance of skilled labor in securing that future. The poster (with added text) was used for Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1944 reelection campaign as a means of engaging the support of union members. It was posted throughout the country in union halls.

Ben Shahn (1898 - 1969) was born in Kaunas, Lithuania. The family emigrated to New York in 1906. Shahn attended New York University as a biology student in 1919, he went on to pursue art at City College in 1921 and then at the National Academy of Design. He was a member of the Social Realist movement. His expressive figurative paintings, murals, and posters were inexorably tied to his pursuit of social justice and lifelong activism within leftist political beliefs. He assisted Diego Rivera in 1933 for the painting of his Man at the Crossroads fresco in Rockefeller Centre. Shahn’s works are held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., among others.’ image and words quoted from https://poulwebb.blogspot.com/2021/01/fortune-magazine-part-4.html
