The question isn’t whether we can be idle; we can’t. The question is whether we do meaningful work, on our terms, to protect and benefit ourselves and our descendants, or do shit jobs that benefit a very few while sliding further and further into precarity and being lost to inevitable disasters.

Allowing massive inheritance allows the idle benefactors to benefit from healthcare, roads, public services without paying towards the costs. So more of the costs are picked up by those who HAVE TO work to pay the bills.

The only lever that addresses idle capacity concerns is limiting grants held per PI—e.g. the cooling off period after an award or hard limits. But 1 grant per PI is already the norm at CIHR—not a ton of redistributive benefit there.
