The Beothuk were the Indigenous people of Newfoundland, Canada, who tragically disappeared due to colonization, disease, and forced displacement. The forest trail and statue at Boyd’s Cove serve as a reminder of their legacy and the ongoing need to protect Indigenous cultures and histories.

0.3% of Icelanders have a novel variety of haplogroup C mitochondrial DNA, possibly of Native American origin. It may derive from a Beothuk woman abducted by Vikings 1000 years ago (the Beothuk were thought to be extinct until recently, when their DNA was found in contemporary Newfoundlanders)

Here is my first publication from my new project on the history of colonial Newfoundland and the Beothuk people, and I'm rather nervous to put it out in the world. Genuinely, all thoughts on this work are welcome as I head into writing a book about it...

Shanawdithit's canoe and map, a short🧵: Shanawdithit was the last Newfoundland Beothuk, after Europeans hunted her people to extinction. Captured in 1823 and knowing she was dying ofTB, she spent her last years making artefacts to memorialise her people. I revisited her exquisite model canoe today 1

The Beothuk were the indigenous people in eastern Newfoundland when the European colonists first arrived, becoming culturally extinct in 1829. We have few words of their language preserved from captured Beothuk women. We use Edrathin and Obditch for our fossil to recognize them with deep respect.
