A Chinese fitness influencer, known online as Abeeeer with 530,000 followers, has apologised for cheating during the 2026 Berlin Marathon after photographs surfaced showing her riding a bicycle during the race. The incident occurred near the 38km mark, according to the Official Marathon Time Integrity Unit (OMTIU), an Instagram page dedicated to exposing misleading race times posted by influencers. Abeeeer had claimed to have achieved a personal best at the marathon, but the OMTIU reported that her fastest split was recorded during the 35-40km stretch where she was seen cycling to the finish line. Following online backlash, Abeeeer deleted all marathon-related posts from her social media accounts. The influencer admitted to violating race rules, stating that feeling unwell was not an acceptable excuse for her actions. Brooks China, a sports brand and one of Abeeeer's sponsors, issued an apology, acknowledging that their verification process had been insufficient. They admitted to not conducting a thorough review of the entire participation process, particularly segment data, and terminated their sponsorship relationship with Abeeeer, stating they would never work with her again. The incident sparked discussions on platforms like Reddit, with users questioning the ethics of cheating and criticising the sponsorship arrangement. The OMTIU, founded by two Australian runners, regularly highlights misleading race performances by influencers, often involving the use of Strava or GPS data instead of official chip times. The Berlin Marathon, a major annual event, has faced scrutiny over the authenticity of race results posted by social media influencers.
