Who knew predators could be this pretty? 🩷✨

The abyssal comb jelly (Beroe abyssicola) patrols the midnight zone searching for its favorite food—other comb jellies. When Beroe finds their next meal, rows of tiny cilia lining their mouths act like teeth, helping them grip onto their prey.

A fun fact for #CtenoTakeOver:

Phronima eat Beroe abyssicola

🧪🦑🐙
Ummm, who was going to tell me that Phronima eat Beroe abyssicola and that when they do they and all their little babies turn pink??

Photo from today when I learned that from putting them in a kreisel together.

Watching animals eat is like my biology crack. I don’t need it, I don’t have to do it, I don’t even always like it, but there’s just something about critters noshing on one another that leaves me gobsmacked. And nothing does it like the comb jelly Beroe [Thread 🧵]

Basically, Beroes are swimming stomachs with mouths attached, and while it’s true this helps them swallow big food, the real secret to their bite lies in a jelly rarity. Let us diagram...

Claude has updated our sequence deduplication script, and you can download binaries here:
github.com/beroe/seqded...
This script removes identical sequences from DNA or protein files.
For DNA it also checks reverse complements. For protein, it can remove identical sub-strings. Runs multithreaded. 🧪

No, this is not a disembodied floating tongue! It's a ctenophore (comb jelly).

But is there a chance for the peaceful jelly prey can escape? None. Once a Beroe has swallowed its prey, it uses its teeth to literally zipper its mouth shut. And once the prey is zipped inside?...
