I was super excited to see lots of these eggs in my plankton sample this week. I had a suspicion as to what they might be, and a little research confirmed that they are ctenophore (comb jelly) eggs!

Micropaleontology research adds to the debate about ctenophores & sea sponges (i.e. first animal on Earth): new research documented molecular compounds of sea sponges reaching back 635 million years, but scientists have documented ctenophore DNA to 600-700 million years ago, as well…

Just learn the fact that "c" is silent here in pronouncing the word ctenophore (comb jelly)

Is ctenophore larval reproduction fixed or plastic? We show that well-fed Mnemiopsis leidyi kept at low densities skip early reproduction entirely and develop straight to large adults.
