In mouse embryos, blood also forms at the maternal-fetal interface, in a tissue the authors call MIXER, not only in the yolk sac. A distinct CD4+ progenitor there contributes to select fetal macrophages. #immunology #DevBio

The maternal–fetal interface is an early hematopoietic niche enriched in distinct erythro-myeloid progenitors | Frontier
Embryonic blood formation is thought to occur only in the extraembryonic yolk sac before hematopoietic stem cells arise in the aorta-gonad-mesonephros region.
