What kind of legacy will Bill Gothard leave when he dies? The 91-year-old remains hospitalized, after a heart attack late last month. But since the 1970s, his teachings on family life, authority, submission and “basic life principles” have guided millions of evangelicals. Many found his instructions saved their families from chaos and helped them live “God’s way.” Yet, Gothard’s ministry has also been haunted for decades by credible allegations of abuse. In this episode of the Roys Report, senior reporter Daniel Silliman explores Gothard’s legacy with Don Veinot, author of “A Matter of Basic Principles: Bill Gothard and His Cultish Teachings.” According to Veinot, Gothard set up a system of authority that insulated him from accountability. Most people know that in 2014, Gothard resigned from his Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP) after multiple women accused him of sexually abusing them. But what few realize is that in 1982 — before some of the women bringing allegations in 2014 were even born — the LA Times published an article with multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against Gothard. Every teaching, every booklet, every module on law, government, health, and history reinforced one principle: obedience flows upward. Accountability does not flow down. The man at the top built a framework that demanded submission from every family, every child, every student beneath him — and structured himself completely outside of oversight.This week's review brings together the most critical conversations from our series on the IBLP — the ideology that powered it, the institutions it penetrated, and the generation it left behind.The Wisdom Booklets taught children that the French Revolution was divine punishment. That democracy without God-ordained authority was dangerous. That physical illness was tied to spiritual disobedience. The Character First program took those same principles, stripped the theological language, and pushed them into public schools as character education. Schools adopted a program rooted in cult authority doctrine without ever understanding what they were implementing.The Duggar family became the public face of a system that extended far beyond one household. Thousands of families used the same curriculum. Thousands of children were taught the same lessons. And when those children became adults, they discovered that what they'd been given — math through fractions, degrees that didn't transfer, ACT scores with no usable academic record, no understanding of their own bodies — amounted to almost nothing outside the walls of the organization.Bill Gothard's conduct eventually became public.
