Billabongs are the floodplain's hidden wetlands, but they can't fill themselves.

Billabongs need big water. Help us speak up for them.

Some fish wait for the river to come to them. This one races across flooded paddocks to find new billabongs, and it can grunt. Can you guess who?

What Is Driving the Global Resurgence of Mangrove Forests?
From the bayous of Louisiana to the backwaters of the Irrawaddy in Myanmar, from the lagoons of West Africa to the billabongs of northern Australia, mangroves are making a dramatic and unexpected comeback. What a difference a couple of decades can make. In 2007, ecologists from six countries asked in a letter published in the journal Science whether we would soon be living in “a world without mangroves.” One of the world’s most distinctive, biodiverse, and carbon-rich ecosystems was in rapid retreat in the face of encroaching agriculture, construction of sea walls, ports, and marinas, and rising sea levels. The mangroves seemed doomed. But in recent months two separate studies have painted a very different picture. A high-resolution analysis of satellite imagery published in Science in June found that the stunted, salt-tolerant trees are now undergoing an “unexpected expansion,” healing after decades of destruction. At the same time, a report on the State of the World’s Mangroves, published in September by a group of NGOs under the umbrella of the Global Mangrove Alliance, found that “mangroves are now increasing in extent, year on year,” said coauthor Mark Spalding of The Nature Conservancy. For the first time, mangrove forests are expanding...

Its been chaotic this past week. My partner found out as of Dec. 1st their ENTIRE DEPARTMENT is being eliminated. There’s more to it, but I can’t publicly disclose it.

If you’ve ever wanted something from my shop now’s the time. QRPs and shares are very appreciated! 💛

Give tea to Sue; she's studying dugongs
Hand off the cookies to Doc, her new groom--
Natter some; soon Paul's off to billabongs
Euphoric visions fade but hearts keep room.

Shelter briefly these children come back home
Stretched from building futures made of wide roam.

It is, of course, a joke aimed at tourists, but one so good that the authoritative Australian Museum joined in. Real Australian legends are the provenance of our first nations folk, the Bunyip is a good start

Now on the standard gauge, the rail motor would have taken about 4 hours, through a green and gold and grey dreamscape river gums, billabongs, canals, vast croplands, stopping at little townlets – Finlay, Jerilderie, Berrrigan, Widgewa, and more. You would […]

The concept of 'slowing down the flow' to reduce erosivity potential and maintain water quality are also demonstrated in the literature. In the Murray river ecologically you want the river system to overflow into the billabongs and wetlands ...

One of the great equalizers of British society is that a disproportionate part of everyone's education was focused on learning about oxbow lakes.

And now I discover that Australians call them billabongs, an objectively superior word, and I weep at the time wasted with all this oxbow nonsense.

DID NOT EVEN KNOW THE ASFB EXISTED. I could have asked so many questions! Like 'why are fish so tasty?' And 'how can I, as a dog, ensure that I'm not damaging fragile fishy environments when I play in rivers or billabongs?'

Adam Gaston, Mangarrayi man: When I was little the country was greens with water birds, billabongs. These are all disappearing. The water on my Country comes from where they want to frack.
