There's a reason these companies hate GDPR and similar.
b) Technical tools
If you are technical, running BIND9 (domain name service) and having a policy domain denying known advertising hosts is one way of hampering this. But it's not enough. Pi-hole as well.

Yes, and no.
If you use GnuPG to encrypt, and you run your own IMAP (dovecot) and MTA (exim) and maybe DNS (bind9) for DKIM/DMARC/SPF - it's non-trivial to pry in it. I use outlook and gmail as ingress for email - but I store no mail in them.

I am glad I finally got around to setting up NextDNS in my #homelab Using the custom dns in the ProtonVPN app, I can have a VPN conn, resolve my #selfhosted Bind9 domains over LAN and blocking ads and trackers on mobile at the same time. This works better than Blokada and is network wide.
