An invasive species.
An island.
Many dishes.
And one big challenge. 🏆

On 22 October in Santorini, we will attempt to earn a Guinness World Records™ title for the largest lionfish tasting.

And to make it happen, we need you too.

Poor progress seems to have been made on GBF Target 6, which aims to slow the rate of alien species invasion. Where measured, establishment rates of alien species continue to increase. Many countries lack sufficient monitoring capacity to assess rates, especially for aquatic invasions. #bioinvasions

Two flawed rhetorical arguments are repeatedly used to downplay the risks of introduced non-native species.
One argument is:
“The vast majority of non-native species are not a threat to native biodiversity or ecosystems (so concern about them is overblown)”.
This overlooks a few crucial points...🧵

To me, it seems highly unlikely that 'invasivory' will solve any problem, but could conceivably create perverse incentives that exacerbate existing invasive species problems. #bioinvasions

One of our weird discoveries: 1st field-documented case of a zebra mussel attached to a fish (lake chub). This phoretic association could facilitate 1) within-basin spread of zebra mussels via fish migration & 2) overland transport by anglers moving baitfish. redpath-staff.mcgill.ca/ricciardi/Ri...
