Via NASA:
"Launched Nov. 16, 2022, aboard Artemis I, NASA’s BioSentinel – a shoebox-sized CubeSat – is over 13 million miles from Earth, in orbit around the Sun...the BioSentinel spacecraft remains healthy and will continue to study deep space radiation until November 2024."

ok so self-replies don't show up in the timeline and this is going to be a bit of a thread so CLICK HERE TO READ BITS it'll be worth your time i PROMISE

anyway my first job after university was to build research satellites. my first such project was a nasa mission called "biosentinel". 1/

Brewer's yeast extract makes up the bulk of Vegemite/Marmite, and Guinness Yeast Extract (GYE).

But let's talk about how S. cerevisiae is the first Earthling to leave Low Earth Orbit in ~50 years.

Enter 'BioSentinel', a cubesat mission to study deep space radiation.

The way the system works:
A printed plastic array of yeast + nutrient broth in tiny voids are placed in front of a detector.

At rest, these yeast are dormant. However, when radiation from cosmic and solar sources cause double-stranded breaks in the yeast's DNA, they become metabolically active.

when i posted about this on twitter in late 2017, the story ended here.

this winter, i lost my job and updated my resume. i went and looked at all my old projects to see if i could use them to show off.

biosentinel, scheduled for launch in 2019, finally flew in 2022. late 2022. november 16, 2022

There's both a normal ("wild type") version of the yeast, and also an engineered strain that has defective ability to repair DNA damage, to determine how efficiently cellular mechanisms can handle the accumulation of radiation damage.

deep is anything beyond earth’s gravitational dominance. biosentinel is in a slightly eccentric solar orbit it at 1AU that, IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY, causes it to drift away from and close to the planet on an 18mo cycle but it is dominated by the sun not by earth

" #BioSentinel —a small satellite about the size of a cereal box—is currently more than 30 million miles from Earth, orbiting the sun, where it weathered May's coronal mass ejection without protection from a planetary magnetic field."

NASA's BioSentinel studies solar radiation as Earth watches aurora
In May 2024, a geomagnetic storm hit Earth, sending auroras across the planet's skies in a once-in-a-generation light display. These dazzling sights are possible because of the interaction of coronal ...

"Bread. Beer. Space. There's nothing yeast can't do".

BioSentinel is het eerste biologie-experiment in de verre ruimte waarbij gistcellen in een baan rond de zon worden gebracht om te bestuderen hoe ze worden beïnvloed door ruimtestraling.

That metabolic activation changes the dye in the broth from blue to red, so that optical sensors can accurately measure the presence of DNA damage.

A device the size of a shoebox containing microscopic astronauts that will tell us about the hazards of deep space.

NASA BioSentinel Studies Space Radiation During Massive Solar Storm Event
In May 2024, a remarkable geomagnetic storm, also known as solar storm, impacted Earth, resulting in vibrant auroras that captivated observers worldwide. These stunning natural displays occur when eruptions of solar plasma, known as coronal mass ejections, collide with Earth's magnetic field. While these events are a visual delight, they also raise significant questions about the impact of solar radiation on humans travelling beyond Earth's atmosphere. Exploring Radiation Risks in Space During this geomagnetic event, NASA's BioSentinel spacecraft took the opportunity to gather crucial data on solar radiation. This research is vital as…
