Fundamentally this is because the legacy of the USSR means that Russia is one giant Rust Belt. It's the outgrowth of a military/heavy industry superpower with virtually no other market segments (electronics, biotech, legal, financial, hospitality) suddenly hitting the wall.
the Imperial core of Moscow/St Petersburg taking up the lions share of revenue generated by the periphery. Russia really is a contrast between two visions: that prosperous inner core and then the far more impoverished and run down 'provinces.'

JD Vance is a Yale Law School graduate who worked for biotech firms and venture capital. In a world of fake-ass politicians, no one is more transparently fake than JD Vance.
JD Vance says of the Middle East that it's "a region of the world made up of countries whose name I couldn't even pronounce"

Listen did I spend 10 years learning how to fix a machine that will never be relevant in biotech again? Sure, but these skills also helped me fix my broken dryer by myself for 30$ 😌
