Fun fact: magnesium oxide is a scam, with like 4% bioavailability. The good stuff, glycinate and citrate and malate are all much more expensive but much higher bioavailability with less laxative effects

oh, "we are cooked?" have you considered tjat cooking increases the bioavailability of certain nutrients?? HMMMM???

Phytoestrogens have poor bioavailability in humans and you'd have to eat a truly insane amount to cause any endocrinal problems.

just remember to eat them with something to drink, you need sufficient water for full bioavailability

What would your most nerdy knuckle tats say?

Mine might be: MORE SALT.
dad at this playground has knuckle tats that say BOOK WORM, which is a perfect combo of nerdy and badass

BUT THE BIOAVAILABILITY LILITH

super important point 🤯

TWO factors determine the efficacy of oral antibiotics:

[1] bioavailability

[2] the highest dose you can give orally without provoking GI intolerance

exposure = (dose)(bioavailability)

You’re right, maybe the term isn’t ideal here.
I think they mean oral cipro can maintain exposure thanks to higher doses than IV.
But oral BLs usually mean lower total doses than their IV equivalents (cefazolin 2g/8h, amox/clav 1g/200mg/8h…).
I had a slide on this from a previous ESCMID Global! 😉

Bioavailability impacts a drug's effectiveness and safety profile and how much of the active ingredient reaches the bloodstream and is available at the site of action. Bioequivalence studies show that a cheap generic drug is interchangeable with a brand-name drug. Kinda useful.

supercool small-molecule bioavailability science thread
The approval of Wegovy pills for weight loss is getting considerable attention.

There is an important pharmacological aspect of this drug which is not (in my view) getting as much attention as it deserves.

GLP-1 is a modified 30 amino acid peptide! Yet it is orally active.

yes but caveat, the bioavailability of the generics suck and you need twice the dosage

[Food]

"Bioavailability" basically refers to how much work your body has to do to absorb a nutrient

Proteins are long chains/strings of amino acids, all twisted around

Our bodies have to cut them into smaller pieces (e.g. individual amino acids) to absorb them
Eating with MCAS: hacking nutrient bioavailability when reintroducing foods
[CN: this post discusses food and nutrition; there are also some hopefully judgement-free metaphors about exercise] A couple years ago, I was talking with my nutritionist about how certain cooking …

If the problem you're having is it wearing off mid-afternoon, it's not just that being the time of highest exposure, it's that diphenhydramine has an "effective level of bioavailability" duration of about 3-4 hours tops but the side effects will linger for a while after the peak bioavailability

Many real medicines did start by investigating folk remedies & plants used for healing! Biomedical researchers are very aware that herbs used for healing have active compounds that can be isolated and improved upon (in the artemisinin example: scientists greatly improved its bioavailability)
