Twice in recent weeks a goldfinch has turned up outside my window, and both times I have gasped audibly. The first time I was too stunned to get a picture. Today I got lucky. He was digging seeds from my echinacea.

Unlike many, I am a great fan of night-calling #mockingbirds. Southern California's lovelorn bachelor birdies had the most interesting repertoire, including car alarms, video games, and the shhsshssh-ratatatata of Rainbird irrigation heads. Vegas Valley mockers are much more parochial. #BirdReport
