#BlendModes
I understand blendmodes a bit more now, I'm growing more and more stronger everyday...

Then I make my gamut compression decisions at the end, and let a prepress tech make sure it looks good.

Simulating the print stuff & an extra colour channel per pixel does also slow things down/increase sizes, & things like blendmodes/filters are all written for RGB and undefined for CMYK(s)

even for 2d, better than Photoshop/Krita. Because you can shove layers or groups of them everywhere. And you have all the usual blendmodes (multiplay, overlay etc) available. And it packs textures etc into the one file. At least when yu don't draw much. Because drawing all the lines was tedious.

Thanks to @valerjonney.bsky.social for taking the og pic in vrchat and @h3llblazer.bsky.social for giving me hints on overlays and blendmodes

Which can instead be replaced by nightmare bandwidth issues and fuckoff amounts of intermediary render targets for complex blendmodes (I have an ongoing feud with layered backdrop blur)

Thanks! ❤
I'm using an old Photoshop version and mostly just the default round brush (variable hardness is amazing). Why PS? Well, layer styles are unmatched imo and i love how intuitive the layers, groups, blendmodes and masks are. Also using Coolorus as a color picker, because it's great as well!

I did some visualization of blendmodes recently, and found it instructive to use contour lines to understand what was going on (here hard light). Also, amazing post!

I mean... All I do right now is relatively simple sharp shapes with basic blendmodes... and bit blur here and there. I think 100% possible to do with vectors. But my back would straight kill me if I would plug my tablet back to the PC😆

Here's a peek at the work in progress UI

As a treat :)

Is the background too much?? Is it too busy?? I always worry that I’ve gone too crazy with blendmodes

tyty!!! snorpey.github.io/jpg-glitch/ makes up a few of the layers but for the most part it's just a cursed mess of layers with different blendmodes.

more practical studies: trying recreating some ff14 ability icons

idk the team's workflow exactly so a lot of this was me fumbling around trying to mimic their geometric shapes and blendmodes.. before saying fuck it and just painting stuff instead. theyre only thumbnails, technique doesnt matter

The layers of the knotted and nubbed Base Shaft of the inadra has been recreated in Substance Painter

took me a whole day to match the look of the shaft!

substance's blendmodes etc. are so different, it takes extra time to keep parity of all layer's visual result!

Working on boss animations for codeWonderlands "Chicken Flight" and just wrapping up the session earlier this week with adjusting some blendmodes @codewonder.land #ChickenFlight #IndieGameDev #aseprite #animation

I think one of the most underrated blendmodes is Erase imo

The Smurfs have since helped me solve this :)
Gotta watch my Blendmodes when drawing to textures...

Instead of working on something useful, I overengineered gradient text by messing with shaders. For science.

(The better way to do this would be to use blendmodes and draw_rectangle_color.)

New game ticking along. Now I have street lamps that light the area below them, courtesy of my new BlendModes. So I`m entering the Victoria era. It`s tough playing catch-up.
My smoke effects currently only work in Release mode, not in Debug mode, so there`s that to fix...

Honestly the biggest hiccup I ran into when i made my switch was not knowing that a folder that had layers with a variety of blendmodes needed to be set to the "Through" blendmode or else the "normal" blend mode of the folder would supersede whatever was inside

Regarding bump maps -> transparency, I'm intrigued but as I haven't actually applied bump mapping yet, I don't think I can follow you here, but I could it be something about setting the blendmodes in an unorthodox way?
Would it be okay for me to ask you about this again at some later time?
