It was a close race, but Henry got 52% of the reef tank vote, despite being the only vertebrate. I'm not going to say it was rigged, but.....

I've got a trip to Ireland next year in the Dingle area to hopefully find some Red/Portuguese Blenny its a species I've long wanted to photograph and film and south west ireland has a fairly good population of them. Any advice on roughly where to go much appreciated.

#fish#blenny#eggs#scubaHundreds of tiny eyes peeking out from their egg membranes 👀 These leopard blenny embryos are developing on the reef while dad guards them. They haven't even hatched yet, and they're already looking right at us 🥹

Look up now, it’s part blenny reflection from the sea and flinty too because it’s been up there a while and it doesn’t fuck about.

Trying to get to grips with blenny/ goby ID myself - it’s a minefield and I don’t yet have a field guide (nor know which to get) - I’m glad this would appear to be Montagu’s Blenny anyway as I suspected.

Fish aren't my thing but this was on Sennen Beach last week. ObsID is 100% it's Montagu's Blenny but Google insists it isn't and is definitely Shanny, until I show it the other image when it decides it was wrong and it's definitely Painted Goby. What do more knowledgeable humans think, and why?

venom, maybe? see: dolphins with pufferfish, or the fang blenny. (I knew about the dolphins & pufferfish, but wasn't aware of the blenny until googling "fish using venom to get high" just now)

Dad duty looks a little different underwater 🐟

Leopard blenny dads guard their eggs, encrusting card corals, protecting them as they develop. Each tiny egg holds the potential for a new blenny, and Dad has his work cut out for him!

A little guy that I got to hang out with at the end of a dive in Lembeh. It was swimming around the mooring line (which is covered in sponges) but occasionally popping out to look at me.

ID tentative, but I think it's a Shorthead Sabretooth Blenny (Petroscirtes breviceps)

Here’s a fang blenny peeking out of an encrusted bottle. Don't let that goofy smile fool you - they pack a venomous bite for defense! The venom drops makes the predator's muscles go limp, letting the blenny swim right out of its mouth!

Does Academia.edu recommend papers based on an algorithm, or are they just gerbils on a roulette wheel?

Tonight's suggested reading:

"Endocrine Correlates of Male Polymorphism and Alternative Reproductive Tactics in the Azorean Rock-Pool Blenny, Parablennius sanguinolentus parvicornis."
