Found this Japanese Beetle perched on a cone flower. The metallic texture of these insects is wild. They are invasive, but so very pretty!

A jelly dive from early May! This was a wild year for jellies with a big variety in the spring giving way to huge numbers of Lion's Mane later in spring into summer. Taken at Old Garden Beach in Rockport, MA.

Beroes comb jelly in the water column. These jellies actually open up from the top side and "swallow" other jellies. Salps look like a very long jellyfish, but they are actually an attached chain of many individual organisms moving around together to feed. The ones we saw ranged from a few inches to a few feet long. We saw several different species of jelly in the water column. I believe this one is Halopsis ocellata. I believe this is Catablema vesicarium, but it is a new species to me. I've never seen these before but there were a bunch of them around on this dive and a few other divers also spotted them this year.

UPDATE: Bats! 🦇🦇🦇 We've lived here for 7 years and only occasionally seen a single solitary bat. Tonight we had at least 3! Very exciting as we have plenty of mosquitoes for them to devour.

I had never seen a woodpecker munching on fruit, but this red-bellied woodpecker seemed to be really enjoying this apple. This orchard is a nice spot for birds with frequent bluebird sightings and a few species of woodpeckers.

Dendronotus frondosus is a species of nudibranch we see quite regularly over the winter and early spring. Normally, they are maybe an inch or so long, but at this site they get to several inches long! A comb jelly floating along over the hydroid field A Flabellina "verrilli" nudibranch under the snoot light. This species is common at this particular location, but rarely seen elsewhere. Low tide dive at Peirce Island in New Hampshire with absolutely awful brown viz. That said, the nudis were still out in force, so I still took a lot of photos without wandering very far. They did need some extra color correction though...

I got eyes on this green heron on a few different days before it stuck around for a photo. I've been surprised to see them up in trees more often than hunting in the lily pads. Their call is very loud!
