Sun may be at low activity levels but my goodness, look at that crop of prominences! AR4549 is interesting to view in white light and hosts around 16 sunspots. For a twist, look at the prominence at about the seven o'clock position! #astronomy #solarastronomy #sun #solarimaging

Still refining my ultra-narrowband H-alpha solar imaging technique.

500 frames with a Sony A7S + TS61EDPH + Quark Chromosphere.

I'm tuning my Python post-processing script around torchMFBD blind deconvolution (github.com/aasensio/tor...)

#SolarImaging #HAlpha
Full-disk view of the Sun imaged in ultra-narrowband hydrogen-alpha light. The orange-red solar disk shows the dense, filamentary texture of the chromosphere across its entire surface, with several bright active regions and small dark filaments. Prominences extend beyond the limb, particularly on the left and lower-right edges. The image was produced from 500 frames captured with a Sony A7S, TS61EDPH refractor and Quark Chromosphere filter, then restored using torchMFBD deconvolution.

Just to give a sense of scale:
Earth is shown here at the correct relative size beside the Sun.
Prominences extend several Earth diameters above the solar limb.

#SolarImaging #HAlpha #Astrophotography
Close-up H-alpha image of the Sun’s limb with a large solar prominence extending into space. A small image of Earth is placed beside it at the correct relative scale, showing how the prominence spans several Earth diameters. A label notes that the Sun’s diameter is approximately 109 times that of Earth.

Sunspots from 2026-08-16! Been a bit since I shared a sun image, so I figured I'd give that a go. Good to see some activity up there!

I took sun images for three straight days and it was really cool to watch the sunspots change in such a short period. Check out how the upper and trailing patches seems to materialize from nowhere and some of the areas shrank. Really cool!

#sunspots #astrophotography #solarimaging #sun 🔭 📷 🧪
Zoomed in to highlight the sunspot areas in each of three images. The first image has a single small spot trailing and nothing above. The second has faint spots above and larger spots forming to the left. The third image has lots of small spots in a cluster above the main group and the trailing spots are more spaced out. 2025-06-23 - one large spot disappears around the right edge. Notice the absence of spots above and to the left of the clusters. 2025-06-25 image with much larger and more complex trailing and upper spots 2025-06-24 - upper and trailing patches start to appear

Summer is only a few days old here in New England, but wow is it hot this week. I left my scope out for some solar imaging and manage to snag some sunspots.

Day 4 of sunspot imaging! The smaller ones seem to have faded (or maybe it was shooting through high clouds?), but the big cluster is awfully pretty.

It's been a bit since I've been able to photograph the sun and it is looking spotty today! If you've still got eclipse glasses, you can definitely spot the two biggest without magnification.

Got in a little time between clouds to get some solar captures today. The photo with more red was taken earlier in the day with the DWARF 3. The one with a more yellow tint was taken with the Vespera 1, after a brief afternoon rainstorm.

Gigantic Sunspot AR4366 just now. It's been tossing out X-class flares, but no CMEs. It has those locked up tight, so no aurora potential from that while it's crossing the meridian. Holding a solar filter up, it's just barely visible to the eye without magnification.
