"The Episcopal Church has long formally opposed the death penalty, & more recently we have called for an immediate moratorium on its use. The idea of live-streaming a firing squad execution is reprehensible in the extreme & will cause moral injury to everyone involved. We need to ask ourselves who we have become as a nation when senior officials decide to make a spectacle of state sponsored violence." ~ Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe

"The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption." #NoDeathPenalty

"Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the
joyous; and all for your love's sake. Amen."

All this hollering about a Bishop asking the powerful to be merciful reminds me of this old post I wrote a few years ago.

Blessed are the Merciful

I was asked to share some thoughts about Mercy today at church as part of looking at the 8 blessings of Jesus at the Start of The Sermon on the Mount. Here, more or less, is what I said…. &#8…

I don’t often post stuff that’s political in tone. And as an agnostic, I don’t usually get involved in matters of religion. But after the response to Bishop Budde’s sermon the other day, I felt compelled to put this together…

Strange how so many people who ask “What Would Jesus Do?” actually choose to do the exact opposite.

With regard the Episcopalian bishop’s supposed criticism of the policies of the new American administration it has always struck me how Trump’s Christian allies are very Old Testament and Ten Commandments centred. Never mention the Beatitudes. We know why #blessedarethemeek #blessedarethemerciful

There are people trying to redefine “mercy” as being an “animal” who chooses to sheathe their sword, to make the sermon on the mount consistent with the glorification of power. … rather than about kindness, gentleness, civility and you know, being like Jesus. #blessedarethemerciful #mercy

The Bishop was doing her job, in fact her call. And when has MERCY become a radical ideology. If you mean radical like Jesus, well I’m all in. #blessedarethemerciful
