The original image is blurred, the camera slipped or perhaps it was a windy day in the mountains. There's no name inscribed on back. She's unknown, but not on that day so long ago. She's my longest mystery to date.

“Oconalufty River (Missing Portal in Time),” digital composite build from the ‘America: Lost & Found’ series, one of the few ‘A:L&F’ works which include a person. They are the specters, the shades, the one gone missing, that one who must have done something wrong, or possibly just the one who remained unmarried and was eventually allowed to lie in the sun, flat on a table baked by sunlight each day until the albumin or nitrates faded, leaving their visage just an enigmatic ghostly shape. Here is one of those images to me. She resides in the Bin of Kershaw/Lancaster counties, her life was lived between circa 1922-1928 to maybe as long as 2010-2015. Yet I do not know who she is. I may never know, but I have an idea she is one of my maternal grandmother’s extended family. That narrows it down to abut 12-15 young women somewhere in their 20-33rd year between the years of 1946-1960. I can guess those years by the physical photograph shape and the undulating edge which in our family matches one of my Grandparents old Brownie cameras. She remains nameless to this day.

"In the gloaming, a trail of Mists" a digital photo from The Parkways Projects. I've been going round & round—how to start this in here...🦋 For it's a multi-tiered sequence of art. Since it began really in 1964, as a 9 year old with a Kodak Instamatic—this shot from 2021, Mount Mitchell trailhead 🦉
A cold and thoroughly rain-soaked trailhead leading down to the Appalachian Trail from Mount Michell State Park in North Carolina. A stand of high-country alpine black spruce. From the Parkways project, a reclamation of sorts to come. I walked down it for a ways, became very cognizant of Time winnowing away, took a number of other images, and then decided to push on up the Parkway, as it had become very real to me that the remaining 12 days were going to be very fleet. By this time, I'd found passages which had been turned, the corners folded back so many times that the bookmarks crumbled and fell on the touch. I was waylaid on the way back up the trail though, and burned the last remaining daylight because, in walking back one sees things that weren't there from the first perspective, or angle of view, depending on the way you see things. By the end of that relatively short and very wet hike, I offloaded over 400 images into a folder set aside for this one little episode that night, once back at my fog-enshrouded campground. Does that make it a chapter, I wonder? Digital photography will be the largest component of what I hope will be a photo-essay within a few years. I'll be launching a site soon which will include much older photos from 1964 through 1972. They are family shots made over five camping vacations through the headiest part of the 1960's. There's a patina of age, a soft depth to them. Then the archival National Park Service images. A sequence on the small bridges & structures now long gone. A series on the people. Two abstract sequences of works, both digital composite builds. A study on the Civilian Conservation Corps efforts to reclaim the old forests & build some of the most beautiful rustic structures in America.

"You're standing on the porch of a farmhouse, just ten yards (if that) from a perceptibly approaching veil of mists while listening to Kurt Vile & Courtney Barnett [see thread] which just seem too synchronous for the slow fade of these first few days of your return home from the high deserts." ≈ A swapping of places. Welcome to the story's beginning. I was surprised on my return from Santa Fe to see the miasma fogs had returned to this region of SC. Within ten minutes the silver grays had slipped into impenetrable, barely indigo-black of nightfall. Falling faster than the mists were approaching. And then the skittering sound, the retching of an interminably long hissing. I'd started 7 panels that day inside the raw pined walls of the farmhouse & had noticed a swift fog outside the window. I'd not expected the hissing. It remained a tenant of the mists for 2 years and 2 months although I was to come and go so often from here all too often in that time. The home was surrounded by a 40ish stand of pine, so most likely I was standing what was likely a tobacco field in 1974—the year I graduated from high school. Two years after the last vacation our family took in August of ’72; a very short one by comparison to what my mind had just dislodged. I walked back in from the side hissing porch, picked a wine glass, poured a tawny port, grabbed my pipe & walked onto the front porch. Dark but a chill was backed by more hisses.

Here is the interior of a very small stone cabin crafted by young men in training as members of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930's. It is a very skilled build, with both the greyish-golden native stone and the deep reddish browns of old wooden rafters, beams and planks hand cut and crafted, the wood probably made of spruce. It's a beautiful remnant of an era fading from view in many parts of America. An old vintage mountain rescue sled, made of steel and oak, hangs horizontally, high above the floor. This is a room steeped in lore. It is in this place of being we may find our anchor beneath the waters which might drown us should we spill over into the deep. We are witnessing the Sun's existence. Between two chairs. I can only consider, what was that difference between the origin of these chairs? One a standard ladderback, the other created by an artisan crafter plying a skilled sense of local aesthetic. Both were most likely crafted by mountain hands. It's of no matter, really, save for just igniting wonder in the mind of the viewer as the entire building, exterior and interior, stem from the old ways. They derive from the past the skills the people of Appalachia knew, and carried in their being all through the course of their lives. That chair on the left, made by hands long ago buried in a grave marked by their surviving family members in hopes that their descendants would remember them. Such is the care some are willing to devote to places where we as visitors might go to reconnoiter, to reclaim our sense of self. It is a certain clarity which has been bequeathed to us by a living being, a young mind who wishes to share an interpretation of just what might have been, oh so long ago. A mighty vote of thanks to Ranger Josh Powell at Big Ridge, for your efforts to maintain, curate and equip this small but well-preserved slice of history.

Day by day, step by step, inch by inch, the mill town enclosures winnowed away, replaced by views alien, beyond the pale of even Marvl comics. Which was saying something.

Ranger Josh Powell is a unique person. He has a vision. He has a grasp of the past. You are viewing his art, his vision, both into the Past and onto our Futures in these lean years to come. We are born from memories, all of us. Some of us know from where our memories come; we are the lucky ones, for we have a heritage of words from those who came before us. Josh has prepared this cabin, which rests to this day in the same place it always resided, at the entry to Big Ridge State park in Tennessee. The only anomalies are due to the vagaries of time, for they are brochures, maps and promotionals from years past, angling up from the depths of their own history, and they are then perfectly placed for all to see, to feel, to observe. We are witnessing Time's passage. There is power in this little cabin. In this little cabin resides love for one's profession, and for all those whose professions preceded you. Look closely at the lay of these stones. Realize they stem from the tired fingers and sore forearms of 20 year old men soon to be called to service on December 8th, 1941. You are standing upon history. You are hovering above souls long buried. You are in a finger's grasp of knowing those who came before you and gave their lives for the freedoms you once had.

Th predominant image you see here is when we drove down to St. Augustine for a four day trip. Wee're at Fort San Marcos here. But come August, we were up at Little Switzerland and Tweetsie Railroad, which began our switch from Motels at the beaches to Camping/Motels in the Mountains. This Projec will end up being a Photo Essay on the history of the Great Smky Mountains NP, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Skyline Drive Parkway and then Shenandoah NP. It was a grand plan by FDR, and introduced the CCC and eventually the WPA. There'll be a lot of elements to The Parkways Projects, both happy, sad, dark and uplifting. For it is a story of the Appalachians.

A collage of old historic National Park Service photographs circa 1935 in Mammoth Hot Springs Yellowstone, where they were training young photographers out West. Another area which was training photographers was the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, back East. The Humans of Bluesky exist on many planes. They stem from many different times. Photography has granted us a way to look into the past of our own existences, for better or worse. In this digital collage made from three different photographs at Mammoth Hot Springs CCC camp, I'm drawing a human long gone from this Earth back into our view. I'll be telling the story of the young man in these photos, and his compatriot, although it's fairly likely they ever knew each other, or ever met, for his compatriot was a much older man, who was an Appalachian farmer in his forties when he first saw a photographer in the field. It was then he decided to apply to learn to be a CCC photographer. His story is heartwarming, as is his peer's story above. For as best as I can tell at present, they both survived WWII. The dynamics of the Four National Parks that make up Great Smoky Mountains National Park & Shenandoah National Park & how an impromptu meeting over drinks & cigars initiated a dream to link the East's two largest National Parks by two scenic parkways in the clouds...it all began here, in two different locations. The image above is a gold and tan representation of multiple older photographs from the 1930's, representing the dawning of outdoor scenic photography, even though it began as a rather staid process of recording structures. Over time, the new photographers began to learn aesthetics, composition and the eye for the sublime, as only they could see it. For they were of these areas.
