William Pitt (the Elder) earl of Chatham was born #OnThisDay 1708, a younger son of Robert Pitt MP, of Boconnoc. He rose to become one of the most important figures of the mid-18th century and was, unusually, Prime Minister as lord privy seal rather than 1st lord of the treasury.

The fall of Chatham in the House of Lords is one of the iconic moments in 18th-century parliamentary history. Mrs Delany noted it 'made a sad uproar, and was shocking to the beholders' but believed he had recovered and was 'not sure he will be sorry it happen'd'.
