#Bombingham
As Angela Davis explains beautifully here in the context of “Bombingham,“ Alabama, there’s a direct relationship btwn white supremacist institutional knowledge & white vigilante & state violence.

i think of it this way: during the bombingham era of civil rights, literal street war, there was one newspaper a day and one over the air newscast. drowning in horrors ≠ informed.

Revisit the history of the civil Rights struggle in America. My family's from Birmingham Alabama, the city known as bombingham. My grandparents fought. They suffered dog attacks, KKK terrorist Dynamite attacks, arrest, and water cannons. There is no peaceful resistance. Get ready to bleed 4 freedom

when we win - because WE WILL - one of my biggest concerns is how to help the people most directly traumatized with healing. bc i've talked to enough elders who lived through bombingham and selma to know that it stays with you.
Been thinking about how we’re not okay here in Minnesota and how events and the state of affaires are echoing in our day to day world. A thread.

Martin Luther King Jr. famously described Birmingham as “probably the most thoroughly segregated city in the United States.” The city earned the grim nickname, “Bombingham,” after at least 21 separate bombings targeted Black homes and (cont.)

I first learned about the double-tap technique reading about how the Klan in operated Birmingham, Alabama, duting the civil rights movement, when it was known as "Bombingham.

I read Dorceta Taylor's Toxic Communities recently, and I had had no idea just how freely and on what scale white people used bombs to keep Black people from living in white neighborhoods. It was practically the go-to solution! Not just "Bombingham" but all over the country!

Maybe it’s bc I’m from “Bombingham” Alabama and my family was involved in the civil rights movement and knew people who had crosses burned in their yards, but we don’t need to only look at 1930s Germany for historical analogies to the rhetoric and actions that have been evolving here (never left?)
I understand the utility of “imagine if you heard about it in another country” but the the thing about US history, with Jim Crow and the Trail of Tears and Chinese exclusion and myriad more, the answer to “can it happen here” is usually “it already did”

Respectfully, if we must die to fight fascism, then we follow the path of legends.

We will not go quietly. We will make them show their bloody hands in the full view of the nation.

If parents of 60s Bombingham could send their children to face the police dogs and hoses, so too can we be so brave.

I know where you're talking about
(as someone from Alabama myself) I also spent a good deal of my youth in Bombingham

A frequência dos ataques também rendeu a Birmingham o apelido sarcástico de “Bombingham”. Quase sempre, porém, os responsáveis escapavam da Justiça, favorecidos pela conivência ou omissão das autoridades locais.

I had the distinct pleasure years ago of talking to Anthony Grooms about his book Bombingham and I asked if he thought B'ham would have been better off without Connor, and he said the city absolutely would have, but the movement would not.

That has stayed with me for twenty years.

“Birmingham earned its Bombingham nickname, in part, because of easy access [for supremacists] to explosives. There were at least 50 explosions between 1947 and 1965. Many of the white men who were inflamed by hatred and activated to violence by the Klan … worked in the city’s mining industry”
A deadly history of racism and the role we all play
You see traces of Alabama's past it in how many of our politicians react to the El Paso and Dayton shootings.
