Orange joined the SCLC staff as a project coordinator, specializing in youth outreach and recruiting teenagers and college students into nonviolent direct action. He worked with fellow SCLC strategist James Bevel to architect the youth-focused strategy of the 1963 Birmingham Campaign. /4

As a recent high school graduate, Orange was uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between older SCLC leadership and the city’s youth. Alongside SCLC Direct Action Coordinator James Bevel, his job was to build a youth movement from scratch. While senior leaders focused on mobilizing adults through church pews, Orange went where teenagers hung out. He visited local high schools, street corners, pool halls and Friday night dance halls across Birmingham. He didn’t use academic or theological language. Instead, he appealed to their sense of dignity, calling out the disparities they faced every day. He also made it a habit to address every young person he mentored as a “leader” to build their self-worth. Because Orange had a gift for “shacking” or binding diverse communities, gangs and young people together in disciplined, nonviolent action, MLK affectionately nicknamed him “Shackdaddy.”

On April 4, 1968, Orange was standing in the courtyard of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis when he witnessed MLK’s assassination. That summer, he helped lead the Poor People’s Campaign in Washington, D.C., fulfilling MLK’s final vision. Orange left the SCLC in 1977 to focus on labor organizing. /7
MLK (center) is served with a temporary restraining order that barred him from leading an upcoming march, April 3, 1968. MLK is surrounded by members of his inner circle, including James Orange (right background). Later that evening, MLK delivered his “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech and was assassinated the next day. On April 4, 1968, Orange and fellow SCLC strategist James Bevel spent the afternoon running nonviolence workshops for young people in Memphis. They drove back to the Lorraine Motel excited to report their success. When they pulled into the parking lot, the mood was lighthearted. Orange began roughhousing in the courtyard with Bevel and Andrew Young. MLK stepped out onto the balcony and watched the horseplay, calling out to them not to hurt each other. Seconds later, a single blast echoed through the courtyard. Like others on the scene, Orange’s first instinct was to drop to the ground. When he looked up, MLK had fallen.

Loss of the USP22 deubiquitylase confers resistance to chemotherapy in small cell lung cancer | Nature Communications
Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) responds exceptionally well to cytotoxic chemotherapy. However, relapse with the emergence of chemoresistant disease is rapid and accompanied by poor treatment outcomes. To understand the genetic basis of chemoresistance in SCLC, we apply in vivo CRISPR deletion screening to patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models. Top screen hits include genes encoding components of the transcriptional co-activator SAGA (Spt-Ada-Gcn5 acetyltransferase) complex. We demonstrate that deletion of the SAGA deubiquitylase USP22 confers cisplatin-etoposide resistance in two chemosensitive PDX models, and that restoring expression in a PDX model harboring homozygous truncating mutation of USP22 re-sensitizes tumors to chemotherapy. USP22 loss increases gene body histone H2AK119 monoubiquitylation at key regulators of neuronal differentiation and suppresses neural and neuroendocrine gene expression including targets of ASCL1. Orange became an organizer for the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union. He unionized the J.P. Stevens textile mills. In the 1980s, he joined the AFL-CIO Industrial Union Department as a regional coordinator, spearheading more than 300 successful labor campaigns across the South. /8

For Orange, the transition from civil rights activism to organized labor was less a career pivot and more a spiritual evolution. Throughout his time as a field coordinator for the SCLC, he worked on campaigns where race and poverty intersected. His experiences during these years solidified his belief that economic empowerment, specifically through collective bargaining, was the logical next step to sustain the legislative victories of the Civil Rights Movement. In 1977, exactly 20 years after his father was fired for union activism, Orange left the SCLC to become an organizer for the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union. In February 1965, Orange was arrested in Marion, Ala., for organizing students. The outrage over his arrest and the murder of protester Jimmie Lee Jackson was the catalyst for the Selma-to-Montgomery marches. That, of course, led to “Bloody Sunday “ and, ultimately, the Voting Rights Act. /6

The catalyst for the Selma-to-Montgomery march actually occurred in nearby Marion. In early 1965, the SCLC sent Orange to organize young people for a voter registration drive. His organizing was so effective that he was arrested on Feb. 18, 1965. A rumor spread that white supremacists were planning to drag him out of jail and lynch him. Civil rights leader C.T. Vivian organized a peaceful march from Zion United Methodist Church to the nearby jail. About 500 citizens, including 26-year-old Jimmie Lee Jackson, joined the march. They were met by Alabama State Troopers and local police, and Jackson was shot in the ensuing violence. SCLC strategist James Bevel felt the community’s grief and anger needed an outlet. He proposed carrying Jackson’s body and marching from Selma to Montgomery to confront Governor George Wallace about the murder.
