@futurebird I'd have loved to do this, especially at that age. At one point my dad played around with bookbinding a bit. I remember him making me a tiny bound notebook (maybe 1" x ¾"), and later I started (but never finished) binding some magazines together like a book, treating them as the […]

Frankenstein is, kind of, my current skill level indicator : I did it multiple times over the few past years, iterating over the design every time. I've very happy with the current version!

God help me, I want to get into custom bookbinding.

there's an interesting parallel here with books, I discovered this when studying bookbinding

old paper/parchment/vellum is nigh indestructible without external damage. modern industrial paper is cheap and comes apart fast, comparatively

this mean the older a book is, the more it's going to last
i do think it’s funny that your games stand to have a longer life span if you make them in “dead” technologies, rather than using modern tools.
like DOS games, Flash, gameboy, snes… all have emulation and continue on indefinitely. the lates UE games likely won’t.

Managed to refurbish my extremely dingy and dusty basement into a tiniest bookbinding studio. A place to dry lino prints and for all the printmaking equipment too~

My 'office' at the weekend at @kentwellhall.bsky.social A very productive and lovely weekend.
Lots of pamphlets bound; 7 #medieval style notebooks; 2 mini medieval style notebooks; a simple mini vellum notebook; & miniature books for fun (& to use up scrap paper).

This is really wonderful! I’ve been thinking about learning bookbinding to make my own art book and record my finished pieces. But now I want to try a studio log as well. Your pages seem so playful and I think it could be a bit like journaling.

Since writing this, I've realised that they probably wouldn't have used glue on bookbinding thread as glue attracts insects, & one of the reasons to have a sewn binding instead of glue binding is you don't have to deal with that!
A thread 🧵 about this week's #novelresearch that will reveal just how ridiculously obsessive I am.

The main character of my next #yafantasy novel is the daughter of a printer who also does bookbinding, which she helps with.

Emily Harley (aka Drawn In The Fog) is a queer, disabled artist and activist living in Leeds, UK.
Through zine-making, illustrations, up-cycled bookbinding and other crafts, they make art that speaks to their queer, crip identities. Their work often explores the spectrum from rage to joy.

Ooh, hadn't checked to see if she's touring. (I didn't make the Agnes Obel gig in the end, on account of skewering my foot with my bookbinding scalpel 2hrs before I was planning on leaving the house, so had to keep my foot in the air all evening to try and stop the bleeding. 😱)

Bookbinding is great fun, best of luck. Here's my most recent finished notebook, which will likely be a Christmas gift.

I have printed out the Principia Discordia and made 5 signatures of 5 leaves each in order to practice bookbinding. I will keep you updated on how it goes and whether or not I lose a finger to an alligator clip.

My dad decided sometime in his ?30s? that his handwriting was illegible, taught himself calligraphy, and used a form of Italic style for all his handwriting for the rest of his life. Calligraphy led him to fonts and typesetting, which led him to printing and bookbinding, then to paper marbling!

For #bookbinding, our great sin is textblocks. Believe what you will, this is a greatly reduced pile for me. And my current deal with myself is I can't typeset another fic until one of the piles is gone. As I am on a long-fic binge, I am in a heaven/hell situation.

I learned two new bookbinding techniques today and one of them is my favorite method so far!
I'm about to take my first in-person class in almost two decades, on coptic stitch bookbinding. There's something exhilarating about going back to school, even though it's only for a day.

You joke but I went on a tear learning some bookbinding skills a couple years back in hopes to make this real
September 25, 2026 at 7:23 PM
i don't just make a "really thick" zine because that gets into a whole other world of bookbinding pain that 6 sheets folded and stapled breezes right past.
