Amazon is reportedly buying rare books in bulk, then destroying them to train AI
A tiny AirTag appears to have followed a rather large trail of books straight to Amazon. The tracker was hidden inside a rare book included in a bulk purchase of nearly 1,000 titles through the Biblio...

I am like one of those Amazon bookscanning woodchipper things except I actually read the books. And don't destroy them afterwards. OK it was a bad analogy.

Amazon Acquires Rare Books for AI Training, Then Destroys Them
An investigation by 404 Media reveals that Amazon is purchasing large quantities of rare books, scanning them for AI training data, and destroying the physical copies in a Las Vegas warehouse. By tracking a rare book from acquisition to disposal, reporters uncovered a process where Amazon employees cut book bindings to expedite scanning, effectively erasing the physical text. The company claims these books are acquired through commercial channels to improve customer services, but critics argue this practice undermines cultural preservation. Legal debates emerged around copyright laws, with some cases requiring AI firms to destroy scanned books to comply with intellectual property rules. Commenters highlighted ethical concerns about sacrificing rare texts for profit, while others defended Amazon's right to manage its purchased assets. The article underscores tensions between technological advancement, corporate interests, and the preservation of cultural heritage.

New (to me) ScanSnap SV600 book scanner has arrived. Arrived from Japan 9 days early (eBay purchase). Was missing the black mat and power supply ( knew in advance). Waiting for the pad still which seems essential to get the auto pagination editing to function. More updates soon!

When I do #bookscanning #digitization I use either my Plustek OpticBook 4800 or OpticBook A300, which are specifically designed for nondestructive scanning of bound books.

But not *well* designed. I have to run Windows on an old Intel Mac to drive 'em, and there's paper cornflakes on the sensors.

There was some progress with #bookscanning : 35 textbooks went through #digitization in total, ≈5000 pages. All copies went to @archive.org. Upload speed was around 50-80 MiB/s with a staging server in San Jose, thanks for fixing S3 infrastructure earlier last year!
