#Bookreports
Because reading is not just about finishing more books. It is also about having something to say after you’ve read them.

Hey, Fam! It’s Priiiiiiiiide! That means 30 days with 30 bookreports of queer SFF. I try and make them varied, diverse, and gaaaaay.

I always try to start and end with an indigenous author. This year we are beginning with Cherie Dimaline.

#BookReports: Jonathan Escoffrey, If I Survive You. Brilliant insights into the ugly truths of race and racism. Powerful characters. Riveting, complex story. Beautiful use of language and dialects.

#Bookreports: Recommended by @mdbell79.bsky.social, I plowed through Anne Leckie's Ancillary Justice. Really struggled with it, but it won lots of prizes. What am I missing? Is the conceit of an AI that's a ship with extensions adequately developed or effective? Do the complex names get in the way?

#BookReports: Austin Grossman, Sean Stewart, Neal Stephenson. New Found Land: The Long Haul. Magic/fantasy akin to The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O. More an audio play than a narrated novel. Not my cup of tea, but finished it to get a better feel for the use of dialogue.

#BookReports: First two installments of @scalzi.com's The Dispatcher. Well crafted who-done-its with amazing dialogue that capture the author's wit. Serendipity: short and light-hearted, they were a nice break from recent heavy, dystopian reads.

#BookReports: The Trove, by @tobiasbuckell.bsky.social. Combination of 'Dude with a problem' and 'Rites of passage' genres. A fun adventure across space with some excellent worldbuilding elements.

#BookReports: @tobiasbuckell.bsky.social. A Stranger in the Citadel [audio]. Great story with a surprising twist about a quarter in, strong characters, interesting ideas relevant to the moment. "You shall not suffer a librarian to live" is a bit intimidating given my background.

#BookReports: James S.A. Corey. How It Unfolds [novella]. Well written, but disappointed it wasn't an extension of the Expanse universe. A reminder that I like long-form fiction with in-depth development of characters and worldbuilding. Short stories often leave me wanting so much more.

When you read a genre novel you also want to take notes on the story including MC name and the overall plot. Write yourself a book report that will allow you to remember the book a year or two later. When you go to events you may talk about this novel.

You should always be on the waiting list for new books.

I encourage you to read one comp book a month.
I encourage you to review/book report one a month.

You won't remember the details later so be thorough. Plan on your own success by becoming competent.

Once you KNOW your real subgenre, focus in on reading a top book every month ongoing. Write yourself a book report placed in your Query file. Find out who represented the novel (agent) usually listed in Acknowledgments. Keep good notes, you will need them.

Book Reports: You should be generating one half-page book report every month. Read a possible comp book, write an internal book report. Copy out the copyright page and estimate a word count. Look up the agent, editor, publisher. Targets. #writingcommunity #booksky #bookreports #comps

I loved the academic setting so much I did #bookreports over the summer! 🤦🏾‍♀️. It’s not a bad idea! What #summer looks like for me now: Byproduct of book reports: #summerschool #summervacation #summertime

Hey #edusky, just saw a post on #bookreports and it made me think about how schools cling to tradition. What is something that schools do because "that's how it was when I was in school," that we should strive to get rid of? I'll go first, "pop quizzes"

Today's Awesome Moment in Class: 5th graders making VR Bookreports in @delightex.com & while the stories are awesome I'm most proud of them figuring out their code on their own. Most questions of "Can you help me?" became "I got it!" before I got to them.
