Yes, as Bordoff and Houser 2015 detailed, the ban on crude exports had been put in place in the 1970s for reasons that no longer applied. Hence, it could then be used as a pragmatic bargaining chip to gain extension of renewable tax credits...a deal which I'm not sure looks quite as bad as you say.

Even if the U.S. accelerates its much-needed transition to clean energy, investment in the energy system on which it still depends remains necessary and strengthens the country both economically and geopolitically, writes Jason Bordoff. foreignpolicy.com/2026/10/14/u...
Environmentalists Are Wrong to Oppose the Senate’s Permitting Deal
America needs to build more to achieve its energy goals of lower costs, greater security, and more clean energy.

The overarching takeaway of the Hormuz crisis “is more a warning than a lesson,” write Jason Bordoff and Meghan O’Sullivan. “The complacency that has developed around the huge disruption of oil flows in the last five months should not be carried into the months ahead.”

Bordoff's insights helped me to better appreciate the scale of oil dependency and that National security is more likely to aid the transition to renewables.

Our dependency on cheap oil is so severe - that we have dropped sanctions on oil from #Iran, the same country #Trump is attempting to bomb into submission.

📖 The energy weapon has returned - and it's changing the rules of global power.

In a new Foreign Affairs article, Meghan O'Sullivan, Director of the Belfer Center, and co-author Jason Bordoff argue that the necessary policy responses could provide a powerful boost to the clean energy transition.

Jason Bordoff & Brian Deese w an excellent rebuttal to claims that access to critical minerals is somehow a major barrier to the transition. Their focus is innovation, but also note how critical minerals are different from oil in allowing long-term policy planning. foreignpolicy.com/2023/10/04/e...

Expert warns Middle East energy infrastructure will take months to recover
Even with this shaky ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, some warn the energy infrastructure in the Middle East will take months to recover, and prices may not drop as much as hoped. William Brangham discussed more with Jason Bordoff, the founding director of the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University.

After the U.A.E. withdrew from OPEC, the White House said that President Trump had broken the intergovernmental cartel. But “over time, a weaker OPEC may mean not lower prices but greater volatility — more violent swings that households and businesses will struggle to absorb,” Jason Bordoff writes.
