- Just having a look into Bats in Heraldry. Seems quite rare in Britain, they appear more frequently on Spanish crests. I did find this coat of arms for the former Welsh county of Brecknockshire (1536-1974). Bats n' Blades, I like their style...

From our recent visit: St David's Church, Llanddew, reputedly the 1st Christian site in Brecknockshire (present building 12th century).
Also pictured: the remains of the medieval Bishop's Palace where Gerald of Wales, as Archdeacon of Brecon, lived between 1175-1203.

Spotted this old road sign on my walk today.

It has the name Brecon County in the circle at the top. The County of Brecon - also known as Brecknockshire, the County of Brecknock or Breconshire - is one of the thirteen historic counties of Wales and was abolished in 1974.

It could use a clean.

Yes, the county abolished in 1974 took its name, Brecknock or Brecknockshire, from the ancient kingdom.

Brecknockshire and Radnorshire have been combined for parliamentary representation since 1918. Prior to then each county had its own MP.
