So it's taken a few months, but here's Powys in 1974, one of the areas of Wales that's seen the most transformation, largely down to how rural it both was and is. The county was formed by amalgamating the three older counties of Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire and Brecknockshire. 1/7

Before Brecknockshire was a county, there was the ancient Welsh kingdom of Brycheiniog.

In the sixteenth century, the ancient Welsh cantrefs of Brycheiniog, Builth and Hay were drawn together as the County of Brecknock - shaped by the Wye and Usk, and enclosed by the Beacons and Black Mountains.

🌸 The county flower of Brecknockshire: Cuckooflower
Delicate pale pink flowers, each with four petals. Cuckooflowers bloom in damp grassy habitats from April to June, a sure sign that spring has arrived.

From our recent visit: St David's Church, Llanddew, reputedly the 1st Christian site in Brecknockshire (present building 12th century).
Also pictured: the remains of the medieval Bishop's Palace where Gerald of Wales, as Archdeacon of Brecon, lived between 1175-1203.

#OnThisDay 1919 Cambrian Railways ballastman William Rees was injured at Erwood, Brecknockshire, #Wales.

A length of rail being carried by a gang was dropped unevenly, crushing Rees' toes.
