just read an article about tony blair's britcards and why they'd be good for immigrants proving right to work/rent, and once again feel compelled to point out that until not long ago immigrants literally had a plastic biometric card that did just that till it was switched out for an online system

(the good Chinese restaurant in town straight up tells me that the bill is 20% higher if I don't pay cash, somehow I don't feel like they are going to be checking Britcards. So unless we are going to have our own ICE this means nothing and if we are that should have been the headline.)

I'd strongly question if that's true. Most people aren't aware of how far down that road we've already gone, which in itself is scary.
Facial recognition is becoming ubiquitous at transport hubs, demonstrations & some shops. The HO is rolling its use out to more police forces.
