I saw this miniature forest of bryophytes in The Japanese Tea Garden and thought immediately of @jaqpup.bsky.social.

Abendlektüre. Am Klavier ist heute Abend J. S. Bach dran. Vielleicht schaue ich mir später auch noch den Sörensen in der Mediathek an.

I think from here on I'll be dressing up as moss permanently. or at least till I get thru all the species described in the 1939 publication on local bryophytes.

Not often I look at bryophytes, I generally find them far too much like hard work, but when it's as delightful as Petalwort (Petalophyllum ralfsii) I'll make an exception. With thanks to @dannywiderscope.bsky.social for dragging me kicking and screaming to it 👍

A walk from my house to the post office. Urban street trees, here Ulmus minor, are really important substrates for lichens & bryophytes. Probably Flavoparmelia caperata, Syntrichia laevipila, Alyxoria varia & Lecanora chlarotera. All common but important to record; as there are few urban records

I spotted these clumps of moss on my walk to my mate's this afternoon. Once upon a time I probably could have named them on sight, as they are very common, but these days I find image searches invaluable! 😊 Grey-cushioned Grimmia, but I prefer "Hedgehog Moss" 🙂 #mosses #bryophytes | #kent #england

Bryophyta are mosses only. Bryophytes are characteristically limited in size, small, and prefer moist habitats although some species can survive in drier environments..

Moss is a bryophyte, an old group of terrestrial plants. first grew 460 million yrs ago in the Ordovician Period, when trilobites scuttled .. & early fish were getting their bearings. And some point along the way, bryophytes began to do it like no other things did. 🇳🇿🌱
