222h2Hi there, and welcome to another episode of Bugwatch! I'm Nicole and I'm an entomologist, which means I LOVE bugs. Today I want to tell you all about a curious new bug I found out near Sierram, a subspecies I don't think we've ever seen before. And here it is! As you can see, I- OW. OW. OW!

BUG WATCH

This Berliner is a Deraeocoris, a plant bug, a first in my bugs collection.

Why bother with bugs?
Turns out, they aren’t little buggers. They are essential for functioning ecosystems.

Quick reminder
No thriving ecosystems
= no thriving humans.

BUG WATCH

Today a finally saw a few more bugs, including a bright yellow butterfly, but overall there’s scarily few around.

This firebug nearly slipped away before I could catch it.

There are still hardly any insects around.

EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED

The way to a future is the establishment of diverse ecosystems.

The more the better!

The more diverse the better!

The more integrated into our villages, towns & cities the better.

EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED

Without insects we can’t survive.

And the decline in insects is already catastrophic.

Even though I frequently searched for it, I only once encountered a Froghopper. I wish I had watched it for a while.

Grateful & Proud

for all the wondrous encounters with bugs, bees, flies, butterflies and caterpillars.

Proud of overcoming much of my discomfort with moths.

I actually remember my pride at taking this photo, my first of a moth, as far as I remember.

Grateful

for Nemonte Nenquimos testimony in her book ‘We will not be saved’ which led me to challenge my discomfort with insects.

Anger

because I didn’t know how many variations a single species has.

Education vastly simplified the natural world.

I didn’t know that there are more than 20,000 different kinds of bees. To give just one example.

Nature is diverse!

Anger

Because I didn’t know how crucial insects are and how everything is connected.

How come that we’ve lost this vital knowledge?

Anger

because I didn’t know how much there is to discover locally.

How come that we didn’t go exploring in school?

I love this ‘elephant’ weevil!

Amazement

about how unbothered many insects seem by the presence of other insect species.

Amazement

that bees are not the only pollinators, and that there’s a lot of diverse insect life to be found on flowers.

Amazement

I still have an internalised image of rich and colourful fauna and flora in some vague idea of distant exotic places.

This year I discovered to my amazement how much can be found locally, like this beauty.

Amazement

See, watch, play, get used to them.

This little spider walked right on me on the beach and instead of flicking it away we spent some fun quality time.
