Swainson’s Hawks are buteos, meaning they are large hawks with fairly broad wings and short tails. However, Swainson’s Hawks are less hefty than many other buteos. They are slimmer and longer-winged, with their wings typically held in a shallow V when soaring.

Here's a nice Turkey Vulture we saw in Cuba with #outstretched wings, for Rob and Alan's #birdoftheday theme. In the Americas, vultures are sometimes called "buzzards" which is a pejorative. But in the UK, "Buzzards" are the common name for many buteos (hawks). Go figure!

Just added them up. Two bald eagles, one harrier, 2 red-tails, several unidentified red-tailed sized buteos, and 18 kestrels today. Most in those red areas.

Next up the round out the buteos, Red-shouldered Hawks at Watatic #Hawkwatch (MA) in September were sporadic migrants and mostly noisy locals. Several juveniles came in close enough for pics, including a couple visits to the decoy owl. #redshoulderedhawk #birding 🪶🦅
