Flowering season getting underway for large-flowered butterwort, one of Ireland's anomalous Lusitanian group: southern European species found here too, but nowhere in between.

Butterwort is also carnivorous, catching and slowly digesting small insects in its sticky leaves.

Pretty cool, overall!! 🌍

I’m sick with a cold but I had to get up to unbox and pot my newest carnivorous plant and the first of its kind in my collection: a Pinguicula aka ‘butterwort’! These guys catch bugs on their sticky leaves 💚

There's plenty of large-flowered butterwort in my place, but I've only ever seen this one, pale butterwort, a few times. It too catches and digests insects.

Its natural range extends down the Atlantic along the western coasts of Scotland, Ireland, France, Spain, and Portugal to Morocco in Africa.
