VINE: Parthenocissus quinquefolia (Virginia-creeper)
#MGNV Tried and True #NativePlant Selections for the Mid-Atlantic Well established throughout the eastern United States, this native vine can be a vigorous spreader and its holdfasts are difficult to remove. However, its attractive foliage and low maintenance can make it a feasible option for difficult-to-grow shady, droughty, low-fertility, and erosion-prone places.

Another unusual late-blooming #NativePlant— annual Euphorbia cyathophora (Fire-on-the-Mountain). I didn’t seed this one this year so must be seed bank from previous attempt to establish it. Wonder if it will have time to turn red?

I favor chokecherry and serviceberry.

I will repeat that we’re in an ecotone in a neighborhood with
mature trees and multiple sources of water and open space nearby.

I’ve said this before— #birds now drive my #nativeplant gardening. As plants mature, it pays off. I like where this is going!

SHRUB: Euonymus americanus (American Strawberry-bush)
#MGNV Tried and True #NativePlant Selections for the Mid-Atlantic One of the few “good” Euonymus, this native* shrub gives a spectacular show in fall. The bumpy, reddish seed capsules burst open to reveal seeds covered with fluorescent red-orange arils, hence the common name Heart’s-a-Bustin’. This surreal effect is fun to show children and adults!

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail Butterflies visiting the white clustered flowers of Late Boneset. This native plant is underrated. Drought and deer tolerant and blooms in late summer alongside goldenrods while the majority of everything else is going to seed. #Papilioglaucus #Eupatoriumserotinum
