This goat’s head rhyton (or drinking vessel) is from late C4th BC southern Italy.

I can’t be the only person looking at this thinking ‘must have one’.

This is Trier (or Augusta Treverorum) in western Germany.

The photos show the Porta Nigra or Black Gate (170AD), the Aula Palatina (early C4th AD), the imperial baths (also early C4th AD) & the amphitheatre (mid-C2nd AD).

Incredible remains.

This terrific mosaic portrays Ocean with a flowing, cascading blue beard to represent waves and tides. A few fish complete the scene.

Here’s a mid-C4th BC Ancient Greek panoply. The bronze cuirass is modelled like a muscled torso. This particular set of armour was made in one of Greek city states of Southern Italy. The helmet seems to show Italian influences.

This late C4th BC platter was used to serve fish. Depicted on it are (I am reliably informed) a torpedo, perch & mullet. It’s Greek but was made and found in Apulia, part of the wider Greek world. The cresting waves around the edge are a nice touch. It’s a lovely piece.

Some C4th Romans; something of a long standing favourite of mine. 15mm Lurkio figures with LBMS transfers from Victrix. A small (exaggerated) conversion to the figures so they represent infantry using large clubs to fight catafracts as documented for Constantine I and Constantius II.

As I posted pics of my C4th Sasanids yesterday it only seems right that I post pics of my C4th Romans today 😁
These are a mix of figures (15mm). The infantry are mainly Lurkio but with some Forged in Battle. the cavalry are a mix of Khurasan Miniatures and Cromarty Forge (3d prints).

The stunning late C4th mosaic from Boxford, England is a magnificent example of Romano-British art. Bellerophon, Pelops and Hercules smacking a centaur over the head with his club, all in one place. What more could you want? Just wonderful.

For this fine #RomanSiteSaturday (34 degrees here☀️ ), it’s Roman Trier (or Augusta Treverorum) in Germany. Here is the city gate, Porta Nigra (started 170), the Aula Palatina, or imperial court (early C4th), the baths (same date) & the amphitheatre (mid-C2nd). Incredible remains.

This beautiful glass cage cup is known as the Cologne cup and is a masterpiece of its type. The decoration and lettering have been adhered to the cup by short glass stems. It sports a Greek phrase translating as “Drink, live well forever.”

Nah, the Romans got there first. This C4th AD mosaic from Piazza Amerina in Sicily shows Roman women exercising.

This angry fellow is Charon, ferryman of the dead, shown here driving a chariot accompanied by a sinister, shadowy demonic figure which is the stuff of nightmares.

It’s from the Etruscan Tomb of the Infernal Chariot near Siena.

A #Roman pottery money-box, purpose-made with a slit in the top to insert your coins through. It was found in Lincoln (Britain), still with some coins inside, which date the box to at least the C4th AD - I wonder who it was who saved these coins but never got to spend them..? AncientBlueSky
