If they don’t consider this a book ban, I’d be afraid to find out what they actually do think is one… a burn pile?

The image shows author Maia Kobabe holding a stack of books and pointing at the reader WHAT IS AABB? A coalition of writers, illustrators, editors & other book creators, standing united against the unconstitutional movement to limit the freedom to read. We support the availability of diverse voices in our libraries, in our schools, & in our culture. We pledge to band together against the oppression of literature, to speak when our voices are silenced, to go where our bodies are needed, & to fight to ensure this freedom. Our concern is not only for the books, but for the children, families, educators, librarians, & communities who suffer when the freedom to read is challenged and taken away. WHAT CAN AABB OFFER YOU? - Regional groups working on legislation to protect authors & the freedom to read state-by-state - Online trainings on digital security, public speaking, & how to counter book challenges in your community -Affinity groups for BIPOC authors, queer authors, authors with disabilities, indie, nonfiction, romance writers & more -Support if your book is challenged or your school visit is canceled! -A very active discord community Person: What if my book hasn’t been challenged? Maia: JOIN! Person: Ok, but what if I’m really busy and can’t do much organizing right now? Maia: JOIN ANYWAY! Even if all you do is sign up, your membership will help lend weight to the letters & statements AABB sends out. As of fall 2025, AABB has nearly 5000 members. Check out the open letter to publishers on AABB’s socials & feel free to share it with your publishing & industry contacts. An Open Letter to Our Publishers- instagram.com/p/DCzYmKcR8uq Maia: I’ve been facing intense challenges to my book since 2021. Knowing that I am not alone in the fight against censorship is what keeps my spirits up! Watching the folks in AABB share information, co-write legislation, show up to library & school board meetings, & speak up to publishers about the need to protect diverse books & minority authors has been amazing! This is a weird & scary time to be an author, but you are not alone! Join thousands of us fighting for the freedom to read, the freedom to write, the freedom to teach, the freedom to learn, & the freedom to share our stories! -Maia Kobabe, 2025

When I was a student in Alberta, I read a variety of enriching books in IB English classes. Many would no longer be considered "appropriate" for schools.

Also, these policies often target books that offer rep. to LGBTQIA+ students who deserve to see themselves in literature. Please sign. #CAIABB

Message encourages people to sign the petition and telling the Albert government No Book Bans. Art includes an illustrated portraits of Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Minister of Education Demetrios Nicolaides. “ALBERTA PREMIER DANIELLE SMITH & MINISTER OF EDUCATION DEMETRIOS NICOLAIDES.”<br> Text reads "The Alberta government has repeatedly denied that the order is a book ban. A book ban is the removal or restriction of access to a book from a library, school, or other collection due to objections to its content." The rest of the graphic shows excerpts from the Ministerial Order 030 / 2025, with highlights bits that make it clear that the order is, in fact, a book ban. Middle section shows the following highlighted excerpts: “must not select for inclusion in a school library, or make available… materials containing explicit sexual content.” “must not permit any children, or any students enrolled in a grade or level below grade 10, to access school library materials containing non-explicit sexual content.” “A school authority must remove materials with explicit sexual content from school libraries no later than October 1, 2025.” Bottom text in yellow on purple: “THIS IS A BOOK BAN.”

Canadian authors and illustrators are speaking up against book bans in Canada, especially recent moves by Alberta's government to censor books in schools. If you are a published Canadian author or illustrator, please join us! CAIABB sign up page: www.karijones.ca/canadian-aut...
Authors & Illustrators Speak Out Against Book Bans In Alberta. Text reads: Canadian Authors and Illustrators Against Book Bans, a group of published writers and artists from across the country, strongly opposes the recent efforts by the Alberta government to ban books in the province’s schools. We support the rights of young people to read freely and to access books in which they may see people like themselves and their families on the page, and in which they may learn about the lives of other people different from themselves. We support their right to find the stories they need and the information they seek. Slide 2: Text reads: The reality is that young people have access to many kinds of media and various forums for content. Books, especially now, are a crucially important and appropriate way for them to learn about all topics, including sex and sexuality, as they develop their understanding of the world and their own relationships and identities. In the context of rising censorship and anti-2SLGBTQIA+ backlash in the United States, we are particularly distressed to see a Canadian province adopting the same book banning playbook pushed by far-right American groups like Moms for Liberty. We are concerned that the new guidelines will be used to target 2SLGBTQIA+ books, a practice that not only censors books and undermines student access, but also sends a harmful message that stigmatizes 2SLGBTQIA+ people and suggests that stories about them do not belong in schools. Footer: Canadian Authors & Illustrators Against Book Bans. Slide 3: As writers and illustrators, we support the work done by teachers and librarians to develop diverse and inclusive collections in schools, and we urge all levels of government to consult with them about any issues related to books in schools. As writers — and for some of us, also as teachers and as parents — we understand the value and importance of allowing students to choose the literature they want. Students who choose the books they want are empowered, allowing them to improve literacy. Footer: Canadian Authors & Illustrators Against Book Bans. Slide 4: We believe that the best way to ensure school libraries meet the wide-ranging needs of students is to provide adequate funding for school librarian positions. Book bans do not protect children. Children do not need to be protected from books in their school libraries. They do need to be protected from the kinds of hate, bigotry, and discrimination that often motivate attempts to ban books. We stand against all attempts at book banning in Canadian schools and libraries, and we hope you will join us in this. Message is signed, Canadian Authors & Illustrators Against Book Bans.
