In California, solar is up and gas is down.
California gas generation down 60% from 2024 as solar, imports surge
Solar generation in CAISO increased 21% from January through May compared with the same period in 2024, the Energy Information Administration said.

Banging on this that batteries met up to 44% of demand on the CA grid yesterday, roughly equivalent to 6 hoover dams. Cheap batteries are powering the grid. www.linkedin.com/posts/nicola...

In CAISO, the sun now shines at night. We can do this everywhere. 🧪🔌💡☀️💨🔋
Today's #energy supply for California, so far. Note: the massive #solar generation during the day (in green) both cuts natural gas use AND charges batteries (purple). Those batteries will fill some of the gap in the evening as solar ramps down.

CAISO nighttime gas usage is dropping to a couple percent. We're almost all renewable + some imports all day. California energy knowers, is the duck curve disappearing here?? We also just got daytime TOU rates that promote 10 am - 2 pm usage. 🔌💡

Meanwhile in California, CAISO is exporting 3GW of excess (mostly) solar.

40% of CAISO all time peak. Absolutely grid re-shaping amount of solar and storage.

Batteries Taking Charge of the California Grid
Batteries have taken a huge leap forward in CAISO this spring, shifting from a noteworthy trend into a major force impacting operations of the grid

I also notice that Caiso and Ercot (the power grid areas for California and Texas) seem to have had good reliability years so far, despite extreme temperature conditions. Almost like solar and batteries help with that.

🔋Grid-scale batteries are replacing gas plants in CA’s evening energy peak!

On 3/29, CAISO batteries delivered 12.3 GW (43% of demand) during peak hours, sustaining over 20% of the grid for hours during the evening ramp

CA’s battery capacity has surged from 1.3 GW in 2020 to ~17 GW todsy

California’s renewables development is undeniably driving down emissions.

Chart below from CAISO data showing 2021-2024 emissions.

The increasingly deep drops in the spring and early summer is solar carrying the (often vast) majority of California’s grid.

It’s almost like renewables stuff works.

On 1 February 2026, batteries in CAISO never reached zero discharge rate while the sun was down, displacing gas and imports in California and supplying renewable electricity all night long.

SunZia, one of the world's largest wind power and transmission projects (3.5 GW), has started feeding power into California's CAISO.

New wind generation records are now being broken every other day.

The US should build on this clean energy leadership instead of abandoning it!

At one point yesterday evening, big batteries injected 6.7GW of power into the Californian grid - the same output as gas plants at the time.

New record for batteries in California (CAISO) 🔋⚡

Yesterday, on the 20th May 2025, battery discharge crossed 10 GW for the first time.

That was enough to meet a THIRD of evening peak demand.

Solar moved fast, batteries are moving even faster...

Another new battery output record yesterday in CAISO, hitting 12.62 GW

Battery output during evening peak hours is now already more than half midday solar output.

The sun shines at night in California's grid.

California Independent System Operator (CAISO). We manage the flow of electricity, operate a competitive wholesale energy market, and oversee transmission planning.

CAISO in '26 vs '23

Gas is down 61%
Batteries up 337%
Solar up 56%
Wind up 13%
Another day, another record: 23.148 GW peak of solar on CAISO Mon Jun 15

WWS has met>100% of demand on 141 of 166 (85%) days in 2026 for an avg of 5.1 h/day among all days

Gas is down 61%; batteries up 337%; solar up 56%; wind up 13% in '26 vs '23

In-state WWS has met 57.4% of all demand in 2026

Fossil gas sputters to a record low, meeting only 2.9% of demand (16.1 GWh) as record new nighttime wind on the CAISO grid complementing daytime solar & batteries kicks it to the curb

Wind record 8.29 GW 1:40 AM 5/15 due to SunZia line from NM (part of CAISO). Record has grown by 1.64 GW since 3/25

EIA says that during the first five months of 2026, utility-scale solar generation in the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) rose 21% compared to the same period in 2024.

Electricity generation from natural gas plants plunged 60%.

Batteries smash another peak discharge record, meeting 44% of CAISO peak demand at 7 PM on 3/29/26 with 12.3 GW

And CAISO is just toying with us, because there are already 15.86 GW of batteries installed

Gas still down 59.3% in '26 v '23

38 straight & 65/88 (74%) days in '26 with >100% WWS

Dang, like 1/3 of CAISO all-time peak and 2/3 of tomorrow's peak.
NEW: California now has nearly 17,000 megawatts of battery storage – reaching one-third of the way to our 2045 goal.

We're deploying more battery storage than any state in America, building a stronger grid, cutting pollution, and securing a safer future for our nation.
