#CALLOW
Fair - I'm a ride or die Jane Austen stan but when I first read Pride and Prejudice as a callow teen? Didn't get it - there's no 13 year old boy who has the literary sophistication or the emotional intelligence to pick up what Miss J. is laying down. And there's only so much that can be taught.

Me as a callow youth: Halloween is a dumb holiday for babies. When I’m a grown up I’ll buy candy whenever I want without playing dress-up!
Me now: Milky Ways cost -how- much? Foh

Oh boy. Can I tell you how many callow and ignorant school administrators I've done battle with over this issue--which I have studied at some length?

In other words, especially the male TERFs/transphobes who aren't queer ladder-hoisters (Wes Streeting, Gareth Roberts and Simon Callow), transphobes are usually just nonces and sexual predators hiding in plain sight (including the cis women ones like JK Rowling and Nicola Murray).

From Roger Taylor's latest album.

No guesses as to who this track 'Chump' is about!

I remember when I was young and stupid, back when I read Heinlein uncritically, when he in an essay proposed an intelligence poll test to vote and thought "that's brilliant. Yes."

Young me was callow and stupid. I got better.
MN GOP House candidate William Beck: "I am personally in favor of a poll test. I know they were ruled unconstitutional, but like, everyone voting, if you have no idea what you're voting for, like, why vote? Like, you clearly don't care if you don't understand what's going on, you know what I mean?"

I love it, but a) I have a soft spot for cinematic fairy tales and b) it's probably the least fleet of their films. It's definitely not where I would start with P&P. I might also say that Marius Goring is miscast; fantastic in AMOLAD but a little callow here (pitting him against Walbrook was unfair)

The faith of Jerusalem? Jerusalem is famously a place of multiple faiths, one of which Pete Hegseth thinks is an enemy of America. He says stuff like this because he's a callow ignorant bigot.

“Very occasionally a play has a significance beyond the confines of the theater,” writes Simon Callow. “Martin Sherman’s play Bent (1979), an excoriating account of the Nazi persecution of homosexuals…, belongs to this select category.”

I'm under no illusions that the majority of white Christians are like Hamilton or Talarico, but it's really really telling how much more sincere their faith is than a callow opportunist like Vance.

I still remember the day some 40+ years ago when I, as a callow young drummer, figured out that Bruford & Howe were just cyclically moving that accent in the Long Distance verses over one beat, and I felt like I’d discovered all the secrets of life and death. 🤣
